ABOUT JEREMY JAMES
Theatre director, actor, dramaturg and teacher, Jeremy's distinctive approach has evolved through his work and training with master directors and teachers in Europe; including Ariane Mnouchkine, Philippe Gaulier, Monika Pagneux and the founding members of Complicite. A guest director and teacher at theatre companies, drama schools and universities in Australia, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia, his sharply crafted ensemble work has been described as ’masterly performed [and] characteristic of the recent evolution of the dramaturgy of the actor’ (Patrice Pavis, Contemporary Mise en Scène – Staging Theatre Today: Routledge 2012)

Workshop Description:
Commedia/ Mask Performance
This workshop will focus on characters, physical lazzi and the creation/performance of a commedia scenario and/or mask performance. We will review all the commedia characters (masks) and look at entrances/exits and stage positions. We will improvise physical solo, duo and group lazzi based on tried and true guides. We will create and rehearse a short performance piece and then perform it for the public at Il Centro. (exact time / dates TBC). Commedia experience is helpful but not essential. The ability to play and improve is an asset.

Short Description:
Intensive led by BellaLuna’s Susan Bertoia. This workshop will focus on commedia characters, physical comic lazzi and commedia performance. Commedia experience is helpful but not essential. The ability to play and improv is an asset. There will be a public performance at the end of session.

Instructor Bio:
Susan Bertoia is a Vancouver-based professional theatre artist, actor and teacher. She holds a BFA in Theatre from UBC and has advanced studies in commedia dell’arte and physical theatre from international institutions. Susan is Artistic Director of BellaLuna Productions.

CIAO!

Un unusual old Italian lady will be arriving to the Italian Centre soon... and she's not there for BINGO!

The lady is the Befana and she'll be there at 7pm on Tuesday January 6th in BellaLuna's new play 'Befana's Star: A Traditional Italian Christmas Story'. We presented it a couple of weeks ago in Burnaby to sold out houses and I cordially invite you, your kids and grandkids to come enjoy this 45 minute play (in english with some italian words). Admission is free!

Snuggle in with your ‘famiglia’ for this beloved Italian holiday story! Legend has it that on January 6th, also known as ‘Epiphany’, a bright star appears in the eastern skies leading The Three Magi to Bethlehem to meet the Child King. Inspired by their quest, an eccentric, old Italian woman decides to follow this star herself and bring some of her cakes and cookies as gifts to the child. In the Italian tradition, the old Befana still flies through the skies on the eve of the Epiphany delivering gifts to all the children around the world. Join BellaLuna’s ensemble Susan Bertoia, Stefano Giulianetti, Marco Soriano, musician Alison Jenkins and more, in a colourful retelling of this story with live music, puppets and Panettone!!
