COMING SOON! Love. Betrayal. Death. // AMORES PERROS (“Love’s a Bitch”) is Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s blisteringly bold, intensely emotional, and ambitious story of lives that collide in a Mexico City car crash.

After 25 years, González Iñárritu‘s legendary feature debut returns to the big screen in a stunning restoration.

“If you haven’t fled the theater 20 minutes into the new Mexican film Amores Perros, you’ll be hooked until the end. It pulses with energy and wild style.” (LA Weekly)

JUST ANNOUNCED! You only get one shot at fame. // The scintillating feature debut of Mary Harron (AMERICAN PSYCHO) and one of the most controversial independent films of the 1990s, I SHOT ANDY WARHOL stars an electric Lili Taylor as Valerie Solanas, a militant feminist whose attempted murder of Andy Warhol brought instant fame to her radically anti-male SCUM Manifesto.

“Ferociously entertaining! Makes you realize just how simple (and simple-minded) the majority of biopics are by comparison.” (IndieWire)

Well hey, ! Welcome to a fresh week. It’s just another Monday night here at ye olde Rio…

Join us at 6:30 pm for filmmaker Taratoa Stoppard’s critically acclaimed “Māori Gothic” horror drama MĀRAMA. Set in 1859, the story follows a young Māori woman who travels to a grand, remote manor in England where she takes a job for a wealthy landowner where she discovers horrifying truths about colonial violence, cultural theft, and ancestral survival. This feels like the mix of corseted, Victorian-era period drama mixed with mystical, ancestrally charged supernatural movie goodness we need to kickstart the week.

Final screening of Zendaya and R-Pats in Kristofer Borgli’s sharp satire THE DRAMA at 8:45 pm.

COMING SOON! Now leaving Cape Breton. // Best friends Tracy and Martina have never been farther than Nova Scotia, but when they hear promises of big opportunities “out west,” the pair pack their clothes into garbage bags and hop a flight to Alberta. What starts as a dream trip quickly unravels: internal tensions, surprise expenses, and cousins who are nowhere to be found. With their return tickets unbooked and Martina’s credit card maxed, the girls are stranded, broke, and desperate.

They thought they’d make enough money opening for the band Slowcoaster at their three stops in Fort McMurray, Edmonton, and Calgary, but budgeting has never been their strength. Things go from bad to worse when old small-town tensions between the girls bubble to the surface. Through it all, Tracy and Martina discover that making ‘Berta Money isn’t as easy as they thought, but sticking together and relying on East Coast hospitality just might be their ticket back to Cape Breton.

“… serves as a prime example of Canadian comedy at its best.” (Exclaim!)

Filmmakers Justine Williamson, Greg Vardy and Brendan Lyle will be on site for an introduction and post-show Q&A.

TONIGHT! Takin’ the beat to the streets! // BEAT STREET helped introduce hip hop culture to the world at a time when it was still a local movement centered in the Bronx, showcasing the four core elements DJing, MCing, breakdancing, and graffiti through real pioneers and crews like Rock Steady Crew and artists such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Melle Mel. The film gave international audiences a vivid look into 1980s New York street culture, inspiring generations of kids around the world to start rapping, breaking, DJing, and painting graffiti in their own communities, while also preserving an important snapshot of early hip hop history before it became fully commercialized.

“Holds up pretty well as one of the few hip hop musicals and a neat time capsule when hip hop was growing and still on the fringes of the mainstream.” (Cinema Crazed)

Presented in partnership with .hiphop, a local grass roots community focused on promoting cypher culture and unifying the elements hip hop through direct community engagement.
