Across a decades-spanning career, Waterhouse-Hayward has photographed major figures in film, music, literature, and the arts, including Martin Scorsese, Leonard Cohen, Werner Herzog, and many others. He was also a vital chronicler of Vancouverโ€™s nightlife boom in the 1990s, capturing the people, energy, and cultural spaces that helped define the era.

This special presentation will look back on Waterhouse-Haywardโ€™s life and artistic career, from his childhood in Argentina and his youth and early adulthood in Mexico, to his move to Vancouver in the 1970s, where he continues to live, work, and find inspiration through his connection with new generations of creatives.

For this event, Beau Photoโ€™s mystery film bags will also return for purchase, featuring film stocks selected to reflect aspects of Waterhouse-Haywardโ€™s life and work.

This event will be of particular interest to emerging and seasoned photographers, as well as anyone with a love of photography, portraiture, and Vancouverโ€™s cultural history.

Step into the world of analog filmmaking with this hands-on introduction to the ARRIFLEX SRII, one of the most widely used 16mm motion picture cameras in professional film production.

Across five sessions, participants will learn the fundamentals of shooting on film through a combination of technical instruction and practical experience, including:

โ€“ Camera setup and operation
โ€“ Film loading and unloading
โ€“ Exposure and light metering with a Sekonic meter
โ€“ Shooting on 16mm film
โ€“ Motion picture film processing in a darkroom environment

Working in small teams of three to four people, participants will rotate through key camera and lighting roles while shooting original footage on 16mm film, gaining firsthand experience with the tools, workflow, and collaborative practices of analog filmmaking.

Participants will also learn the basics of developing motion picture film in the Cineworks Analog Resources Lab darkrooms. The series concludes with a private screening of the group's unedited footage in the Cineworks Black Box studio.

Whether you're new to analog film or looking to deepen your understanding of the medium, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the complete 16mm filmmaking processโ€”from camera to darkroom to screen.

Participants will receive a digitized copy of the unedited footage a few weeks after the series concludes.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

___
Patricia Gruben's feature film ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ condenses the history of antiwar activism in the late 60s into the story of one American army deserter who flees to a Doukhobor community in BC, and his former girlfriend, who becomes increasingly radicalized at home. The film is about how history is portrayed as well as about the events of those times, with archival footage and faux documentary mixed into the drama. Writer-director Gruben and cinematographer Devan Scott developed a technique to integrate the various sources into a hybrid narrative that interrogates itself.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

___
Amรฉlia, an emerging non-binary filmmaker, has been given 2 months and a research grant to find out more about francophone q***r life in western Canada. As the only participant from (what is colonially known as) British-Columbia and with only 3 weeks left, the pressure is on: Amรฉlia rushes to find any traces of francophone q***r people in Vancouver before the year 2000, the year they were born.

Amidst this chaotic research effort, they find Andrรฉ, an older French-Canadian gay man that lived in Vancouver for 25 years. Through their conversations, Amรฉlia unlocks Andrรฉ's hidden personal visual archive, that proves that, indeed, francophone q***rs were alive and thriving years before they were born. This documentary shows how Amรฉlia put together a presentation about their own q***r ancestors through screen capture, archival footage, interviews and narration that ends up changing their own view of themself as a q***r French-Canadian in the west.

I shot this film with my little Maltese, Yayoi, on our early morning walk at the beach. We were and still are, in shock and immensely grieving Nina Simone-my dalmatian that had left this planet in April. Sunday morning, the beach. I was walking my dog, Chaka Khan and carrying the weight of recent loss of my little Maltese, Yayoi, an unlikely procession appeared: men walking side by side with motorized toy trucks. The trucks variedโ€”massive, miniature, clumsy, yet the men moved without choreography, without conversation, without spectacle. Just walking beside their motorized toy trucks of every size and shape. The only sound was the hum of miniature engines and the rhythm of their footsteps.

"My experimental practice explores the tension between the visible and the invisible aspects of humanness, and how perception shapes what we accept as reality. I am drawn to what is plainly in front of usโ€”often overlooked, yet deeply revealing. By weaving together these observations, my work reflects on the human condition, tracing subtle narratives of time, place, and existence." -Faye Fayerman.

In 1857, two company men plot a road for a new sawmill in the treacherous ancient forests of New Caledonia (now known as British Columbia). Lost, starving and frustrated with one another, the natural world begins to conspire against them as their presence begins to anger the spirit of the land itself.

Cineworks is proud to announce our selection for Telefilm's Talent to Watch 2026 program in the Main Component stream: filmmaking team Asher Penn and Nathan Drillot for their film: ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ.

๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ is the story of Oscar, a 35-year-old Canadian in emotional freefall, that gives up his sick cat and tries to rebuild his life through sobriety, dead-end work, and a fledgling filmmaking partnership that takes him to Los Angeles. There, he drifts through unstable creative circles and escalating personal chaos, making a series of impulsive decisions that steadily undermine his stability and relationships.

Congratulations, Asher and Nathan, we wish you all the best on what comes next!

Thank you as well to the filmmakers that put forward a submission to Cineworks for the Talent to Watch Program. We appreciate the hard work and investment, as we continue to be inspired by the talent and commitment of independent filmmakers in Vancouver.

๐˜ž๐˜๐˜•๐˜‹๐˜ž๐˜ˆ๐˜™๐˜‹ (2025, 70 minutes) - d. Sharon Lockhart

๐˜ž๐˜๐˜•๐˜‹๐˜ž๐˜ˆ๐˜™๐˜‹ builds upon core themes that have defined Lockhartโ€™s career: an exploration of place and how people engage with landscapes, a durational approach to attention and focus through extended static takes, and a deep, long-term commitment to those who appear before her lens. Filmed on Fogo Island, located off the northern coast of Newfoundlandโ€”the easternmost province of Canadaโ€”the film unveils the islandโ€™s striking geological formations, unique climate, and austere beauty, brought to life through portrayals of youth. This film is part of the paraDOXA series.

This film has a Q&A or Panel on Saturday May 2.

๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ (2025, 84 minutes) - d. Morgan Tams

The cycles of the seasons dominate this unflinching and intimate portrait of a small community living off of the land in the remote wilderness of Western Canada. Alternating between visceral observations of everyday life and the quiet evolution of the land and its residents, the film unfolds as the seasons rise and fall, following five community members as they negotiate the complex intersections of lifestyle, landscape and the relentless passage of time. Filmed entirely off-the-grid by a longtime resident of the farm, what emerges is a tender and bracingly honest portrait of the cycles of growth and decay among a chosen family of outsiders. At a time when audiences are questioning how 20th century โ€œprogressโ€ has failed our environment and society, ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ offers a glimpse of a possible alternative - without offering any easy answers.
