Touchstone Theatre

Touchstone Theatre Essential Theatre from Canada/Turtle Island Former Artistic Directors have included Gordon McCall, John Cooper and Roy Surette.

Most of Touchstone's activities have fallen into one of the following three categories: premiere productions of plays by local playwrights, second productions of important plays premiered in other regions of Canada, and innovative collective creations developed within the company. Within each category Touchstone has explored a wide variety of styles and always stayed true to the exploratory and celebratory spirit of the company.

This past weekend, Touchstone was proud to support a workshop for Termite Collective's developing project, Termite, through the City of Vancouver's CASC (Community and Artists Shifting Culture) grant program.

The workshop was an exhilarating and fruitful exploration of music & movement with Anju and Arno expanding the creative elements of Meghna Haldar's new script. We're excited to have played a small part in the creative process and look forward to seeing where this project goes next.

🎭 PLAYS WE LOVE: Earworm
By Mohammad Yaghoubi

💬 “I was once again taken in by the Playwrights Guild of Canada table at the PACT conference. My suitcase is now mostly comprised of plays.

One of the ones I picked up was "Earworm" by Mohammad Yaghoubi. Never judge a book (or play) by it's cover— but in this case the gorgeous cover is an excellent portent of what's inside. "Earworm" is a story about trauma, loss, parenting, love, and immigration. This piece packs a punch; nuanced political theatre created in solidarity with the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. It is, at times, utterly hair-raising, and illuminates the ways in which Canada is not always a refuge for refugees."

✨ Thank you to Manon Beaudoin for leading an incredible Jeu-Clown workshop last month.

Over three days, this amazing group dove into play, impulse, and connection — exploring rhythm, movement, and the art of embracing flaws as sources of comedy. Plenty of laughter, courage, and discovery in the room.

Grateful to everyone who showed up ready to take risks. The power of the ensemble was truly felt!

Thank you also to our presentation partners &

🎭 PLAYS WE LOVE: A chance to spotlight our 'staff picks' of new Canadian/Turtle Island plays!

KAT'S PICK: "Everything I Couldn't Tell You" by Jeff D'Hondt

💬 After emerging from a coma caused by a traumatic event, Megan awakens altered, her injuries leaving her capable of sudden violence. Her physician, Cassandra, recruits Alison, an Indigenous clinician, who introduces a technologically enhanced expressive arts therapy and Lenape, their nearly extinct shared language. As language unlocks memory and identity, it also unleashes grief.

Jeff D’Hondt’s play offers a heartrending meditation on this grief — not as a single emotion, but as a force with many faces: rage, disconnection, terror, hopelessness, longing. Each character experiences their own version of this grief. The play refuses to simplify or sentimentalize healing, locating recovery in the volatile space between body and memory, and as something relational, culturally-rooted, and hard-won. Here, Indigenous language becomes a site of rehabilitative power, yet reconnection is anything but simple, being both medicine and trigger. A complex and thought-provoking work.”
