Velvet in the Gallows is this weekend!

Check-out this pic of our super cool venue, Tyrant Studios, the hippest little room in Vancouver.

This venue, on the second floor of the (in)famous Penthouse Nightclub has hosted entertainment royalty through Vancouver’s history. Some of the stars who have strode through the doors include Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and many more.

This Friday and Saturday, you can see three more stars on stage at Tyrant Studios: Frank, Mama Blues, and Donnie Nice Guy!

There are still double-feature tickets available, which get you into the Tyrant Studios set following Velvet in the Gallows at 9:30. Friday night is Anita Eccleston Sextet with their trumpet-lead ambient electronic jazz, and on Saturday it’s Russian Tim's new Disorganized Orchestra alongside local favourites Balkan Shmalkan.

Meet Donnie Nice Guy, one of the stars of Velvet in the Gallows!

Colin Cowan is a comedian, actor, writer & producer that's been going since 2001. Residing in Vancouver, yet born and raised in New Brunswick, his high energy sets can include anything from family, parenthood, age, dumb jokes, obscure observations, adolescent memories, crowd work, Canadian lore, to s*x, drugs, identity, Trump, American politics, and dead-on deep cut impressions. Some past credits include every year of Just For Laughs Vancouver, NBC's Trial & Error, The Second City (Toronto), CBC's This Is That, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Hubcap Comedy Festival, & Yuk Yuk’s On Tour.

An avid shape-shifter, he can be found performing standup comedy and obscure-character comedy regularly onstage at clubs & revues around Vancouver when he is not on the road. Colin is also the creator/owner of Vancouver's renowned comedy venue China Cloud Studios (est.2009) and the host of Vancouver's popular standup show Comedy World. You can find his most recent clips and debut comedy special 'Live to Tape' (2024) on YouTube and Instagram. He also recently produced upcoming specials for comedians Dylan Rhymer, Sophia Johnson, and Jacob Samuel's 2025 release 'Big Talk.

Meet Mama Blues, one of the stars of Velvet in the Gallows!

Jamie Dale is a multi-talented artist who's been rocking the Vancouver scene since, 1996! She's a singer, comedian, actor, producer and visual artist, who blends, blues, jazz, R&B, rock and country to create a unique sound. With her band Jamie Dale and Friends, she performs at venues like the Fraser Valley Blues Society, Princeton Pub, and the Yale Hotel to name a few, and shared the stage with legends like Lucky Peterson and produced a fundraiser for a animal shelter and the main headliner Long John Baldry. Recent Theatre credit: Substituted and played Audrey II in "Theatre of the Damned" - a dark comedy and satire production at the Beaumont Theatre, featuring a singing/acting skit from the " Little Shop of Horrors". Comedic chameleon! Over the past two years she's brought to life characters like the Dog Trainer, Mrs. Chickenson, and Mama Blues in the Vancouver scene. When not commanding the stage, Jamie channels her creativity into mixed media canvas art, showcasing her work in exhibits like The Sunshine Coast, or Vancouver Culture Crawl. With a career over two decades, Jamie Dale continues to dazzle audiences with eclectic blends of music, comedy, and visual art. This Vancouver-based creative force shows no signs of slowing down, always pushing boundaries and entertaining crowds with her unique brand of fun!

Meet Frank, one of the stars of Velvet in the Gallows!

Priscilla Costa is a Vancouver-based clown-theatre artist raised — and still raising hell — in the soggy gutters of East Van. She transforms a life of hard knocks into absurd, heartfelt, and hilarious subversive performance. An internationally trained performer in clown, bouffon, sketch, improv, and acting, her work walks the tightrope between absurdity and emotional truth.

With over 25 years of training in clown, improvisation, and character-based performance, her screen and stage work is informed by film and television acting with Julian Paul and by the teachings of Keith Johnstone (Impro Theatresports), Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall), Philippe Gaulier (Master Clown Teacher), Massimo Agostinelli (Cirque du Soleil), Gina Bastone, and David MacMurray-Smith and Ian Wallace (Richard Pochinko Technique).

She is the creator of the solo ‘clown’ shows Mona Monaé and I’m Gonna Be Frank, and the sole founder and producer of Vancouver’s sold-out GutterClown Cabaret, what started as a cult-favourite night celebrating fearless, adults-only clown and comedy performance at a punk bar in East Vancouver. As a comedic performer and MC, she commands the room through a rotating cast of alter egos that turn any variety show into a wild, unruly ride.

Priscilla teaches clown and bouffon in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island and offers private coaching for artists developing original work and embodied stage presence. She brings an explosive mix of mischief, vulnerability, and rebellion to every stage she touches.

Elsa Orme (she/her) is a stage manager and designer currently living on the ancestral and unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil- Waututh) First Nations. She is excited about sharing stories in a way that centres community building and is passionate about creating processes that focus on collaboration, play and empathy.

DANCEBOY | MARCH 19-22

Sandeep Johal is a Canadian visual artist whose practice engages drawing, collage, textiles, and large-scale murals. Through her Indo-folk feminine aesthetic, she confronts themes of bleakness, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness, hope and beauty. Johal’s work typically centers around the stories of women and while she highlights female suffering in its many forms, these are ultimately stories of resistance and resilience.

Johal has worked on a number of notable site-specific commissions including a multi-image hoarding project with Cadillac Fairview (2024), a series of banners on Granville Street in partnership with Downtown Van BIA (2024), a mural for the Vancouver Art Gallery’s inaugural project (2022), a digital projection mapping for Facade Festival produced by Burrard Arts Foundation (2019), and a 4,000 sf collaborative mural project for Vancouver Mural Festival, which centred around the Komagata Maru Episode and involved the denaming of the federal building it was painted on (2019). Her work was part of the group exhibition In/Visible: Body as Reflective Site through the McClure Gallery and Visual Arts Centre in Montreal in partnership with the IMPACTS Project (2019).

Johal holds a Diploma in Fine Arts (honours) from Langara College (2007) and a Degree in Education from the University of British Columbia (2002). She lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

DJ ZENIA IS IN THE HOUSE!!

Sharon Nadeem is a multimedia journalist who works closely with the communities she reports on. She specializes in long-form reporting on complex topics like housing, supply chains, corruption and migration. Her in-depth work, primarily on documentaries and podcasts, can be found in major media outlets including PBS FRONTLINE, PRX, BBC News, Globe and Mail, and CBC. She currently works as a producer and head of partnerships at the Global Reporting Centre, based at the University of British Columbia.

When she's not reporting, she moonlights as DJ Zenia who prefers to be a food writer.
