Through the Opera Sprouts Initiative, selected teams will develop original works for students in Grades 3–6, with mentorship and support from experienced opera professionals. The program culminates in workshops of the new works, with one team receiving a full commission for an opera that will tour to schools across British Columbia, from Vancouver classrooms to communities throughout the province.

We're looking for artists excited not only about creating new opera, but about creating opera for kids: stories that spark curiosity and imagination, and that give the next generation of Vancouver audiences their first connection to this extraordinary art form.

It’s a brand new century. Puccini’s Tosca is just hours away from its world premiere.

All of Italy had swooned over La Bohème, and audiences were ready for more of that juicy, sentimental romance. They expected soft rock.

What they got was… prog metal.

So what happened?

Join Chloé Hurst and Aaron Durand for Opera Adventures: TOSCA, as they step inside the fierce cultural pressure cooker that produced one of opera’s biggest hits.

From Sarah Bernhardt’s influence on the original play to religion, politics, violence and literal class warfare onstage, we’ll dig into the history and music behind Puccini’s explosive masterpiece.

Featuring tenor Martin Renner Wallace, with Perri Lo at the piano, the evening brings the world of Tosca to life through conversation, history and live music.

Meet Mihnea Nitu, a returning Young Artist with a voice built for the big moments. ✨

The Romanian-Canadian baritone has been recognized for his robust vocals and charismatic stage presence, with recent roles including Marullo in Vancouver Opera’s Rigoletto, the title role in Blond Eckbert, and the Father in Hansel and Gretel. 🎭

This season, he appears as Sciarrone in Tosca, Fiorello in The Barber of Seville, and Baron Douphol in La Traviata. Three operas. One very busy baritone. 🎶
