We believe opera has something urgent to say.

Apparently, the world is listening.

Inside Vancouver Opera has just been ranked the #4 opera podcast in the world by Feedspot — an independent platform that editorially ranks over 2.7 million podcasts globally. That puts us above the vast majority of major international opera houses and dedicated music media outlets competing in this same space.

Thank you for being part of it. 🎙️

Storytime at the Opera is back this summer with two free morning sessions for little ones ages 5 and under—and the guest list is very good.

First up: someone's been in Mr. McGregor's garden again. Join storyteller Gillian Hunter-Gibbs, pianist Perri Lo, and guest soprano Eve-Lyn de la Haye for a musical, movement-filled morning with Beatrix Potter's most mischievous rabbit.

Vancouver Opera is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Cris Derksen. Though we never had the privilege of working together directly, Cris’s presence was felt across the entire landscape of Canadian music — as a Cree-Mennonite cellist, composer, and visionary who wove classical training, Indigenous traditions, and electronic innovation into something entirely, unmistakably their own.

Their work reminds us of what music can do when it refuses to be contained. We hold their family, their wife Rebecca, and the many communities of artists and listeners they shaped in our thoughts during this unimaginable time.

Reports are emerging that the musician, composer, and pillar of the Indigenous classical community passed away in car accident after father’s funeral in Northern Alberta

This one is for every mother who ever saw something in their child before anyone else did.
Soprano Jonelle Sills and her mother Desiree join us for one of the most intimate, moving conversations in Inside Vancouver Opera history.

They talk about gospel choirs and opera stages, about coming to Canada with nothing, about the voice Jonelle wanted to keep only for herself — and about what it means to watch someone you love become who they were always going to be.

What an unforgettable night! Last Friday, Vancouver Opera’s Musetta’s Waltz Gala, presented by RBC PH&N Investment Counsel, took over the Queen Elizabeth Theatre stage and raised $520,000. Truly incredible, and a record-breaking result for our annual gala.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to our committee, to all of our generous sponsors, to our live auction winners, and to everyone who donated so generously in support of Vancouver Opera.

A heartfelt thank you to our Gala Co-Chairs Isabelle Spothelfer and Bruce Munro Wright, OBC, and to auctioneer Fred Lee.

We were thrilled to honour some of Vancouver Opera's most distinguished supporters and contributors. This year’s honourees were Judith Forst, OBC, OC; Yoshiko Karasawa; Regina Boxer; and Jim Wright.

Special thanks as well to our performers Lucia Cesaroni, Olivia Howe, Zachary Rioux, and Tina Chang.

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors: RBC PH&N Investment Counsel, Montecristo Jewellers, Anthem Properties, Deloitte Canada, Haywood Securities, Imperial Metals, and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. We also want to thank our event partners: Savoury Chef, Smitten Events, Début Event Design, PRP, Queen Elizabeth Theatre staff, and everyone else who helped make the evening such a success.

Thank you for making this extraordinary night possible. ❤️

🔥 TOSCA
🎼 Giacomo Puccini
🗓️ OCT 24 - NOV 1

Passion, politics, and betrayal collide in Tosca—a breathtaking opera where love burns bright against the dark tides of tyranny.
