How impossible is it to stage manage a show when you only see one actor at a time? We asked Vincent River's Jethelo E. Cabilete, here's his insights:
"1) since it's a more realistic process without established blocking, any cues have to be taken from either dialogue or presuming what the actor will do.
"2) observing the actors interact with proxies during rehearsals changes their processes, making them more fluid in their reactions and responses.
"3) lots of mental gymnastics from an SM's perspective, since you have multiple possibilities of how the performance may progress.
"4) the play itself is quite deep and thought-provoking. It has a personal connection to me, as a gay man who has experienced verbal gay-bashing, ostracism from some family members for several years and having the love of other family and friends support and push me through the hard times.
"5) the relevance of this play even in these times, since gay-bashing, ignorance and homophobia continue.
"6) a more fluid process for an SM, since the open nature of the rehearsal process means I also have to think of multiple ways to guide and manage the play during performance."
