In this workshop we will learn dances from the Yiddish repertoire and explore the expressiveness of hands and facial gestures to convey a range of emotions as a relevant characteristic of Yiddish Dances. We will practice movement and spatial patterns that build the energy of the group.

Additionally, we will have a taste of how these dances are being taught at Klezmer festivals nowadays.

The idea is to include these dances as part of our shared traditions and present communal celebrations.

Be ready to have a great time and dig deeper into Ashkenazi wisdom and joy.

Modifications, including chair dancing, will be offered to welcome all bodies.

***Schedule & Fees***
This class will run for six weeks, from October 22 to November 6 2024.
Sign up for all six classes for $90 with a program pass.
Drop-ins available as well. If price is a barrier for participation, contact us please.

Songs of the Jewish Ukrainian Heartland
Concert, Saturday Feb 25 at 7pm, at Or Shalom, Vancouver

Michael Alpert is a world-renowned expert on Yiddish music, dance and culture, and received the US National Heritage Fellowship award in 2015 from the US National Endowment for the Arts. He is a klezmer musician and Yiddish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, scholar and educator who has been called a key figure in the klezmer revitalization of the 1970s and 1980s, making a rare Vancouver appearance.

Michael is joining Craig Judelman and Sasha Lurje, residents of Berlin and members of the band Lebedik. Craig brings amazing violin and fiddle playing, and Sasha Lurje is a singer from Latvia. Together they explore the transformations of Yiddish music, from the Shtetls of the Old World through its journey to the city, and the new lands of North America and Israel.
