The Sarimanok for my brother, done back in 2023 in Mindanao where he lives.

The Sarimanok comes from the Maranao of Lanao del Sur. One legend says a prince fell for a moon princess who came down every Friday to bathe in a scented well. Lovesick and unable to reach her, he sat in his palace toying with a carved wooden bird and challenged it to carry him to the moon. The carving came to life, grew enormous, and took him up on its back. Neither of them was seen again.

Another version says the Sarimanok is the messenger of the Sultan of Lanao, and the fish it carries is the message itself.

Forgotten Island Movie comes out next week and the Sarimanok is in it. A DreamWorks film, worldwide wide release, people in theatres all over the world meeting this bird for the first time. That’s a strange and huge thing. Our stories usually stay in the family, passed down at kitchen tables or carved into houses most people will never see. Now one of ours is on a screen that big.

I hope people look past the movie and find their way to the source. That they learn it’s Maranao, from Lanao del Sur, from Mindanao, a region the Philippines and the world have ignored for a long time. Representation only means something if the credit goes where it belongs.

But I’ll take it. Our kids are going to grow up knowing the Sarimanok the way I grew up knowing the phoenix and the dragon. That matters.

From Hibr Flash Day. Palestine in poppies, on an Irish Palestinian.

Poppies come back every spring in ground that’s been bombed and bulldozed and stolen. They don’t ask permission. They just return. Memory of the martyrs, blood in the soil, proof that the land still knows its people. And the map, from the river to the sea. Carried for generations in gold, in thread, and now here on skin.

Ireland and Palestine know each other well.

Thank you for trusting me with your story and sharing your energy and spirit with me N. 🫶🏽🇵🇸🍉☘️🇮🇪

Finally got to do this Swallow piece from my Hibr Collection! 🥰

Swallows symbolize freedom and the idea of returning home. Birds have also become a symbol for the martyred children of Gaza in recent history. This swallow also carries in it’s beak, an olive branch, which is another symbol of peace.

Done on my 9-11 Flash Day Fundraiser for Hibr • Tattoos for Palestine. Thank you for your solidarity and support L! 🫶🏽
