🚨 Remote-Access Scam Warning

Remote-support apps are legitimate tools, but scammers can abuse them after pretending to be your bank, a tech company, government agency, or IT support.

Common apps scammers may ask you to install include Microsoft Quick Assist, AnyDesk, TeamViewer QuickSupport, ScreenConnect / ConnectWise Control, NetSupport Manager, and Zoho Assist.

The app itself is not automatically malicious — the red flag is an unexpected person pressuring you to install it or give them control of your device.

Protect yourself:
• Never install remote-access software for an unexpected caller, text, email, or pop-up.
• Only allow remote support when you contacted the organization through its official website or trusted support channel.
• If you already gave access to someone suspicious, end the session, disconnect the device, contact affected banks/accounts, change important passwords from a trusted device, and run a reputable security scan.

🛂 SCAM ALERT: Fake passport-service websites

Canadian authorities recently laid charges in a case involving allegedly deceptive websites and ads that made people believe they were dealing directly with the Government of Canada for passport services.

Watch for:
• Search ads or websites that look official but use unfamiliar web addresses
• Claims of special or expedited passport access for extra fees
• Requests for personal or payment information before you verify who operates the site

Protect yourself:
• Start passport applications from an official Government of Canada website you navigate to yourself
• Don’t assume the first sponsored search result is a government service
• Pause and verify the web address before entering personal or financial information
