A stack of handwovens to end the week. Preparing to ship them off to

It’s been very satisfying to work through the process of creating this pattern collection. From planning, and troubleshooting to the sheer labour of weaving it all on a rigid heddle loom. Watch for more details in the weeks to come.

Adventuring here with my youngest teen this week. We are good travel companions. Neither of us feel the need to do and see everything. One or two outings a day is enough.

This sea is complex. Healing and grounding and dangerous and calm. We’ve already seen sea lions, seals, and hawks. Reminds me of how the world must have been before we took over.

Reading The Scent of Time by Byung-Chul Han and working on my in the afternoons. Lingering and drinking lots of tea in between misty walks. And feeling so grateful for this time and the privilege of being here.

This small piece of cloth was embroidered by a Ukrainian pilot during WWII. My mother in law told me a little of his story when she gave it to me. He worked on it to help keep his mind off worrying thoughts and to remind him of home. I can’t remember how she received it or how I came to be given it. Today I gave it a little press and hung it next to this piece by Barbara Cohen.

Like many prairie-born Canadians I have so many connections to Ukrainian food and culture. When I married a Ukrainian I learned even more about Ukrainian Catholic traditions and have learned how to incorporate some of them into our family and share them with friends. What’s happening now is beyond comprehension. It’s strange to be writing a post at all when it all feels so dark.

So far I have been proud of our government response to this war that has been going on for much longer than we’ve really wanted to admit. In particular, Chrystia Freeland, Anita Anand and Mélanie Joly who are all strong, fearless, intelligent and determined. Thank you for keeping the pressure on.

I also wanted to share some places that have been providing good information and ways to do something in case anyone else is feeling it.

Excited to finally share some new work!

This is one of the pieces made late last year and part of The Uninvited Project.

“Uninvited, the book, began as a creative collaboration: two living authors and a very ancient text all speaking to one another. Uninvited, the project, continues in the same collaborative spirit by making space for the work of artists in all sorts of media to create in collaboration with the poems, the dialogues that inspired them, and/or each other.”

It was such a gift from o be part of this project and to think deeply about stops and pauses and in between spaces.

“For me, in-between spaces create a sense of slowness, a place to notice things and a structure for moving forward. Traces of past and present slip and overlap through memories. In the in-between, time slippages, glitches, errors, and vulnerability also become part of the equation for possible futures.

The mnemonic feel of woven or discarded cloths are touchstones for this sense of in-between in my practice. Cloth is ubiquitous, strong, vulnerable, and overlooked. The durational and physical aspects of building, untangling, and unravelling threads and cloth are central to my work which also exists in the in-between as I shift between printmaking, alternative photography, and shaft loom weaving, processes which are steeped in history and dependent on physical labour and technique.”

You can read more and see all of the pieces as well as the whole project at the link in my profile.

I’m working on a newsletter, if you’d like to find out about classes, exhibitions, or just interested in my studio process. You can sign up on my website or in the link in my bio. I aim to send them out quarterly but last year wasn’t as frequent. I want to make sure what I’m sending is relevant and useful.

I’m also sending out an ambient playlist to new subscribers. I see it as a way towards a deeper conversation about all things tactile, liminal and curious with you.
