TO LOVE OR NOT TO LOVE

We are reflecting on memorable moments from our production of To Love or Not to Love at the Annex Theatre. Join us as we share the director’s insights on how this play came to life and where its journey leads next:

“I was drawn back to the ancient story of Khosrow and Shirin while searching for a way to speak about the world we live in today. Surrounded by conflict, displacement, and uncertainty, I found myself asking whether love is still enough to hold us together—or whether it has become another role we struggle to perform. An absurd play-within-a-play became the natural form for this question, where myth and reality, actors and characters, truth and performance continually blur. I don’t offer an answer. I simply invite the audience into the question.”

Our final performance is coming up today at 4 PM, followed by a talk-back with the artists.

Meet 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐀, known artistically as 𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐌𝐀𝐙𝐄𝐋, the Music Director of 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄.

Based in Vancouver, Madmazel is an Iranian singer-songwriter, music director, and creative director whose relationship with music began in childhood, recording her voice onto her father’s cassette tapes. At seventeen, she stepped into Iran’s underground music scene as a performer and has since built a multidisciplinary practice spanning lyric writing, songwriting, music direction, and creative direction.

Her work is rooted in a desire to speak through words and music, bringing into presence what might otherwise remain unseen or out of reach. Alongside developing her own practice, she also works with other artists to help shape the path from identity and intention to sound.

In To Love Or Not To Love, Madmazel shapes the production’s musical language through original songs and music direction, drawing inspiration from the lyrics and poetry of Nezami’s Khosrow and Shirin.

Meet 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐡, who takes on the role of Mary in 𝐓𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐎𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞

Sara is a Vancouver-based actor and director who has performed on stage in both Tehran and Vancouver. Theatre is not simply something she does, but something she deeply cares about and continues to return to.

For Sara, theatre is a way to enter other lives, build new worlds, and give characters the chance to exist beyond the page. Through theatre, one life can become many, and each story can open a different way of seeing, feeling, and understanding the world.

In 𝐓𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐎𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 , Sara plays Mary, the director’s assistant, a role that moves between narration, observation, and emotional connection, becoming part of the rhythm and inner world of the story.

Meet *𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐚𝐥*, who takes on the role of Kevin in *𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄*

Steve is a seasoned, classically trained actor with more than 35 years of performance experience, bringing a long career across stage and screen to the production. His television credits include Fire Country, Motherland: Fort Salem, Dream Moms, and 21 Jump Street, alongside lead and recurring roles in independent productions and festival films.

His work also extends to voice and performance for major video game productions, including Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage and EA Sports’ FIFA 20. Bringing together his classical training and decades of performance experience, Steve now brings that depth, precision, and commanding stage presence directly to the theatre.

In *𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄*, Kevin is an actor caught within the shifting dynamics of the production, as professional tensions rise and personal life takes an unexpected turn.

Reflecting on our performance of THE LAST BATTLE, dedicated to them and their loved ones, we realize that even though we stepped into their shoes through our art for a brief moment, we can never truly understand their heroism. We may be alive, but a part of us will forever remain with them.”
