We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of British artist David Hockney (1937–2026). 🤍
“David Hockney was one of the most influential artists of our time, a visionary whose career was defined by wonder and reinvention. Over more than six decades, he transformed the way we see and understand the world around us, embracing new technologies, experimenting across mediums and celebrating the profound joy of looking and creating.
The Vancouver Art Gallery has been privileged to share a nearly 50-year relationship with Hockney’s work, starting with our presentation of “A Rake’s Progress” in 1977, continuing to the present.
Ultimately, Hockney believed that seeing was itself a creative act and his extraordinary body of work remains his enduring gift to the world.” — Eva Respini, Interim Co-CEO and Curator at Large
We are honoured to hold a significant body of Hockney’s work in the Gallery’s permanent collection, ensuring that his remarkable artistic legacy is seen and felt for generations to come.
