Big day at the Gallery!

Prime Minister Mark Carney 🇨🇦 and Diana Fox Carney stopped by for a visit, and we were so pleased to welcome them.

Eva Respini, Interim Co-CEO & Curator at Large, gave a tour of our current exhibitions—“That Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature” and “Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change”—along with a special visit to our vault.

The Prime Minister also took time to greet visitors along the way, making it an extra memorable experience for everyone in the Gallery today.

Thank you for visiting, Prime Minister Carney and Ms. Carney!

It’s match day in Vancouver! ⚽

As Canada takes the field, we’re highlighting a work from the Gallery’s permanent collection by Vancouver artist Ian Wallace, a central figure in the development of photo-conceptualism.

A study for his “In the Street” series, this work depicts three boys playing soccer in Brussels—a simple moment that speaks to the universal joy of the game and the ways sport brings people together.

Like much of Wallace’s work, it reflects his interest in everyday urban life and the relationships between photography and painting, as well as the individual and the modern city.

Discover work by Ian Wallace in “Highlights from the Collection” at the Gallery this summer. Plan your visit at https://www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/exhibitions/highlights-from-the-collection.

American photographer Stephen Shore’s “Victoria Avenue and Alberta Street, Regina, Saskatchewan, August 17, 1974” (1974) captures a quiet Canadian intersection with his characteristic focus on colour, light and the rhythms of everyday life.

Produced as part of his “Uncommon Places” series, the image transforms a familiar streetscape into a study of urban space and temporality.

This photograph is now on view in “Stephen Shore: Uncommon Places,” the first exhibition to foreground Shore’s Canadian photographs.

Just extended! Visit us now through July 26, 2026, to take a closer look at an impressive selection of Shore’s influential work. Find out more at https://www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/exhibitions/stephen-shore-uncommon-places/.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of British artist David Hockney (1937–2026). 🤍

“David Hockney was one of the most influential artists of our time, a visionary whose career was defined by wonder and reinvention. Over more than six decades, he transformed the way we see and understand the world around us, embracing new technologies, experimenting across mediums and celebrating the profound joy of looking and creating.

The Vancouver Art Gallery has been privileged to share a nearly 50-year relationship with Hockney’s work, starting with our presentation of “A Rake’s Progress” in 1977, continuing to the present.

Ultimately, Hockney believed that seeing was itself a creative act and his extraordinary body of work remains his enduring gift to the world.” — Eva Respini, Interim Co-CEO and Curator at Large

We are honoured to hold a significant body of Hockney’s work in the Gallery’s permanent collection, ensuring that his remarkable artistic legacy is seen and felt for generations to come.
