Been a bit slow updating, for you guys who were really curious about how the color turned out.
I used a combination of cerulean blue, which has a slightly blue to the red cast compared to the top layer of cobalt turquoise light which tends more "yellow". The cerulean went down first. It doesn't have a lot of tinting strength but did cast my gresaille to the blue spectrum. The Cobalt turquoise has a high tinting strength, it went over top followed in the shadow areas with a little more cerulean blue to bring back the more of those reddish tones. Two of the more expensive pigments on the market but I think gave a beautiful effect. Choosing colors to nail that water was a challenge as no one pigment really nailed it, and they needed to be transparent/semi-transparent for glazing purposes. By combining the two in glazes I came as close as I could by allowing the colors to interact with eachother as the light passes through each layer of glaze.
The dog was done in burnt umber and shadows darkened with ultramarine blue and Payne's grey.

How does it work? I'll take a photo of your pet at eye/chest level from head on. When I get home, using photoshop I will remove the background and put you pup in a dreamy background.

Gresaille is done...ish. I'll have to revisit the eyes (mere pixels in my reference). So the drawing is not bang on yet. When this happens I look for more references from similar angles of the same breed... Only high resolution. I then use that to fix and fill in details of things that are just too blurry to make out otherwise.

Loving how photographic it looks from a few feet back but how painterly it looks close up.
Next step after adding details and fixes to the gresaille will be glazing in the color.
So many rainbow caustic effects in the lighting... That's going to be a fun challenge.

Happy New Years everyone!!!

I was quiet for a few weeks as I was working hard on pet portrait gifts for clients. I really wanted to share these earlier but wanted to make sure I would not accidently ruin someone's surprise if they cam across an in progress shot on the internet.

Here are some of the pieces that I worked on for clients over the holidays :)

Two in oil, some Digital and one in Acrylics. One client requested her digital portrait be printed on a very soft faux suede pillow. It was a huge hit with her family :)

Our pets are our best friends and comrades, and as we spend our lives together we develop those little patterns, routines and habits that make our lives so rich, joyful and worth living.
Every day in the afternoon Rosie, the love of my life and I, take our walk to Trout Lake. This routine is a great opportunity for us to bond and be in nature together. There is nothing better than the way your dog looks at you when they are having their best day.

Here is a recent fun little portrait I did for a client. This one is a digitally painted piece using specialized brushes that mimic a wet on wet technique in Oils. These are incredibly beautiful pieces and are quicker to paint so they are more affordable than their hand painted counterparts. They come printed on premium canvas with a white boarder to help with framing.
I am also attaching the reference photographs so you can see they type of work I do as an artist to give you the best possible painting.
