We are in the height of summer, more than halfway into the year of the fire horse.

Every week I find myself in water — a morning plunge in the cold river at Lynn Canyon, a sunset swim in the salt water at Spanish Banks. It resets my nervous system. This year, water has become my counterbalance to fire.

The way of water has no blockages. It simply flows around them.

These cards from the deck all hold water. Notice the shape and movement in each one.

At the start of this year, I began reading about the I Ching, something from my own culture I‘d always wanted to go deeper into.
It’s vast. A cosmological map as much as a divination system. You go in thinking you‘re learning a practice and realize the depth has no bottom.
It’s one of the oldest oracles still in use. And like Poesis, it speaks entirely in image and verse — each hexagram paints a scene, a poetic narrative.
An image doesn‘t resolve the question. It creates the conditions to feel something almost as if you are right there in a vivid dream. And then it hands the question back to you.
