Ok, this post went a little long. But soil texture is very important, and I didn’t want to leave too much out. While hand texturing is a good quick and cheap method to determine soil texture, it can be difficult if you are new to it, especially in the field, since larger particles and organic matter can make it tricky! Save this post for later, I think the test explanations are super helpful, I’d love to know what texture your soil is. Plz do not try this on potting mix! Lol

This post definitely went a little long, but I guess I just didn’t want to miss too much info for you guys! Make sure you save this post for later, I think the descriptions of the different tests are super helpful! Remember if you are struggling to determine your soil texture by hand it can be really hard to learn at first! Also, this is just for the mineral portion of soil or the fine earth fraction (all particles less than 2mm). Samples with lots of organic matter can make it really hard to hand texture.

- Lessons from the Soil: I can’t believe how easy this all came to me, stay tuned for more!
- Important things happen in the dark - sometimes the work you put in that no one else sees can be your most impactful, just like important processes occur underground where we can’t see.
- working together makes all the difference - it takes a team with all different sets of skills and roles to be successful
- Fresh air will do you wonders - soils need to be well aerated to function well, so get yourself outside and into nature to reset whenever you can
- Variety is key - whether it’s cover crops, varied nutrient sources, intercropping, or agroforestry, trying new things, having a varied diet, and learning new things
- Good things take time - soils can take 100-1000s of years to form 1cm, don’t be frustrated if you stumble and take a little time to reach your goals.

What else should I pack??? Some of my most used items when I’m heading to the field to check out a soil or take a sample are:
1. Snacks (banana bread) and water to keep up my energy 2. Hat and sunscreen (I am very white) 3. Munsell colour book for describing soil colour 4. Soil knife to poke and prod the soil 5. A shovel to dig of course! 6. A measuring tape or ruler to measure the soil depth 7. Plenty of sample bags 8. A pH kit for field measurements 9. A write in the rain notebook for the rainy Pacific Northwest weather and 10. A sharpie and pencils!

Put all them together and you get the wonderful mix that helps to feed our planet! 🌎
