This is a good example of optimal approach to cover up. If you swipe to see the video you’ll see the spider tattoo that will be covered on the third session as it will be disguised by everything that sits underneath the ribcage structure in darker tones. Because the eye can be drawn up the fullness of the arm to the focal point of the face it’ll help cheat the eye away from the cover up. I’ve seen a lot of cover up requests lately that’s a second or third cover up made harder because the current didn’t want to accept project with a more full scope and a longer process. Make the extra investment to do it right the first time, it’ll actually save you more tears in the long run.

The presentation of this one has been evolving quite a bit since its first conception. Originally we were thinking a burning church here, very on brand for the heathen theme, but the raven image was sticking out as something that both the current and I were intuitively attracted to. Honestly I never really get tired of doing my take on birds, there’s so much cool opportunity to push the gesture and make for something really expressive and unique. On the last image you can see the healed tattoo from last time, a character that’s suffered the famed “blood eagle”, which was another cool challenge for composition. I’m really excited to continue this concept piece.

First pass at my take on the three headed Cerberus. I intentionally focused on something more elemental but with a looseness I felt evoked the chaotic underworld nature of the myth behind the inspiration.

Everything is a work in progress. Each layer builds on itself like ancient pyramids, with new details emerging as if the work is evolving of its own accord. I can’t claim full agency over the creation any more than the canvas, as if it has existed an an autonomous potential, interfacing with the human network until finding fertile ground in the circumstances that enable it to gain material form, if only for a blink in the vast landscape of space and time.
Maybe we are like this too.

For those of you interested in process, this represents approx one month with three appointments. The first two were consecutive to complete the upper half, which has deceptively more surface area, followed by at least 3 weeks healing time. The bottom is fresh and done in a single day. There will be some tweaks as we start to lay in the subject matter for the inner arm in the coming months but it’s really nice to develop a cohesive theme and flow for the outward facing portion of the arm in one go.
