Join us tomorrow evening at 6 PM to celebrate the opening of History Paintings. Both Gordon Hookey and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun will be in attendance.

Gordon will also be delivering a talk on Tuesday September 15 at 6 PM in the gallery as part of TWILIGHT HOUR, presented by ECU Painting.

🗣️ UPCOMING WORKSHOP:

September 26&27, 11am—3pm

ECU alumni Jeneen Frei Njootli will give a sound workshop for Indigenous students and participants, drawing from their long-standing sound and performance practice. Participants will learn to solder their own contact microphone, make a sound tool out of a belonging or material that is significant to them and create a collaborative audio work together.

The workshop will also include group listening and sounding, experimenting with contact microphones, effects pedals and guitar amps. Participants must be able to attend both days. Space is very limited and registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

We are pleased to announce our fall exhibition, ‘History Paintings’, which opens to the public on the evening of September 10th from 6–9 PM.

‘History Paintings’ features the works of renowned painters Gordon Hookey (Waanyi people) and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun (Cowichan, Hul’q’umi’num’ Coast Salish; and Okanagan, Syilx). Set within the artists’ respective homelands of Australia and Canada, their works offer vivid and powerful reinterpretations of a painting genre typically associated with mythological and classical narratives. Hookey and Yuxweluptun embrace the monumental, confronting colonial histories from an Indigenous perspective with canvases as rich as they are expansive.

We are pleased to have Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun in residence this summer. During his open studio residency at Libby Leshgold Gallery Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun will continue to work on his Fire Painting series. The series builds on his deep consideration of ongoing political, cultural and environmental issues.

We will be holding open studios on Fridays 12-5pm. Come by and say hello 👋

Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun is of Cowichan (Hul’q’umi’num Coast Salish) and Okanagan (Syilx) descent and is one of the most outspoken and influential contemporary artists in Canada. Yuxweluptun presents his ideas through hard-hitting, polemical, but also playful artworks that now span a forty-year career. Yuxweluptuns’ works offer brutal critiques of issues such as land title, residential schools, and the destruction of the environment, making him a crucial voice in contemporary art. He lives and works on unceded, traditionaland ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories.

This production residency marks the beginning of a partnership between Libby Leshgold Gallery and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art to support the production and presentation of three artists from the Pacific Northwest at the Asia Pacific Triennial 2027 in Brisbane, Australia. Please join us in welcoming Whess Harman to ECU!

Harman’s residency will take place in a studio space within Emily Carr University, where he will continue his series of banner drawings, a series of work that reflects urban indigenous culture while integrating ethos of the Potlatch into artistic practice.

This production residency marks the beginning of a partnership between Libby Leshgold Gallery and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art to support the production and presentation of three artists from the Pacific Northwest at the Asia Pacific Triennial 2027 in Brisbane, Australia. The Cinematheque and Emily Carr University of Art + Design are pleased to present an evening with award-winning animators Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, who met as classmates studying film, video, and animation at ECU in the mid-1980s. This program will include screenings of the filmmakers’ trio of acclaimed shorts—𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘴 (1999), 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 (2011), and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘳 (2022), each Oscar nominated—as well as a slideshow presentation by the artists charting the process behind their unique collaboration. Illustrated with clips, images, and anecdotes, the lecture will detail the inspiration, working methods, and creative techniques behind 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘳, the duo’s most recent work. The evening will conclude with a conversation and audience Q&A moderated by Alla Gadassik, a film scholar, curator of animated media, and Associate Professor of Media History and Theory at ECU.

Starting today, the second instalment of 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 continues on the Urban Screen. Running through to August 3, 2026, the programme features work by Zachery Longboy and Red Buffalo Nova Weipert.

Born from a dream Longboy had where he led a parade out of the forest, 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 is a layered, collaged, digital diary of filmed and found footage, animations, and performance. Just as in dreams themselves, these fragments manipulate, twist, and morph into each other. Moving through Longboy’s dream space, one can’t help but wonder—‘what did last night’s slumber tell you?’

#𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭 is an experimental short film that weaves together Indigenous resilience and strength while calling attention to the systemic racism and injustices maintained by colonialism. Highlighting the inaction of the Manitoba government, the film serves as an emotional call to action to protect our stolen relatives.

The Libby Leshgold Gallery is pleased to partner with the ECU Aboriginal Gathering Place on this programme as part of the exhibition, 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥, which ran February 2–March 7, 2026, in the Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons. The exhibition was curated by Leanne Inuarak-Dall and Vance Wright and placed special emphasis on Indigenous alumni, students, staff and faculty as part of ECU’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Join us in celebrating the first class of ECU’s second century at 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸 2026. Graduates across Fine Arts, Media Arts and Design are coming together for the first time to present the culmination of their years of experimentation, innovation and hard work.

From physical installations to digital media, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸 is an opportunity to get the first look at the next generation of artists and designers who will shape the future of creative practice.

Thank you to everyone who came to see 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘢𝘳. The gallery is now closed for installation, opening next week with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸, ECU’s annual exhibition featuring the work of over 400 graduating artists, designers, and creative thinkers from the class of 2026.

The exhibition area includes the Libby Leshgold Gallery and runs along the full length of the Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons (MOEC), as well as inside the Library + Learning Commons.

Five Minute Film Festival with Carole Itter

Please join us for The First Annual Five-Minute Film Festival, a program of experimental films by Luke Blackstone, Carole Itter, Allison Hrabluik, Natalie Purschwitz, Rhoda Rosenfeld, Trudy Rubenfeld, Jenn Pearson & Shyla Seller, and Ana Valine.

Organized by alumna + former faculty member Carole Itter and Allison Hrabluik, current faculty member, The First Annual Five-Minute Film Festival, is a program of short experimental films organized to launch Itter’s new short film 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘎𝘦𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘊𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦. The films will be followed by a conversation between Carole Itter and Anna de Courcy. Both Anna de Courcy and the puppeteer Beth Diespecker worked closely with Carole during the making of the film.
