Join us at Gallery 881 for the opening reception of Half of love is still Love, a new exhibition by Long Xi Vlessing.

Returning to his family village in Fujian, China, Vlessing traces grief, intimacy and love through photographs of the people and landscapes around him, finding moments of humour, tenderness and transformation within everyday life.

📖 The celebration also marks the worldwide launch of Vlessing’s first published monograph, Half of love is still Love, the debut title from healing time, an imprint by Hard Liver. Long Xi and publisher Anita Hwahmee Joh will be with us for the evening, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

✨ Gallery 881 is excited to collaborate with The Polygon Gallery for SlideNight Vol. VII, continuing a series built around artists, projected images, and conversation.

This edition, Black Femme Image-Making and Self-Representation, brings together Karice Mitchell, Rebecca Bair, and Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, whose practices explore and intervene in representations of the body, Blackness, place, identity, and self-representation.

The event is curated by Olumoroti (Moroti) Soji-George and Roger Larry. Join us for an evening of lens-based art, ideas, and conversation at The Polygon Gallery!

🎉🎉 What a month!

Michael de Courcy: One in a Million has now come to a close and we want to thank everyone who came through the doors, spent time with the work, chose photographs from the wall, and shared such enthusiasm for Michael’s extraordinary record of Expo 86.

Throughout One in a Million, photographs were removed from and added back into the grids, allowing the installation to continually change. The empty spaces became part of the work, echoing the movement of people arriving at and departing Expo 86. We even had a family recognize one of their own! ❤️

More than 860 photographs came together to create this collective portrait, and over the course of the exhibition, the wall developed a life of its own.

🎉 The Comings and Goings from Expo 86

As Michael de Courcy: One in a Million comes to its final days, photographs continue to be removed from and added to the grids. That shifting installation is part of the concept of the exhibition, reflecting the constant movement of people arriving at and leaving Expo 86.

Visitors can also choose photographs directly from the wall to take home. Each photograph is available for $10, or choose 5 for $45 or 10 for $86.

More than 860 photographs from Expo 86 make up the installation, creating a collective portrait of the fair and the people who moved through it.

We also have large-format limited-edition fine art prints available from the series. The large works currently on display in the gallery are artist proofs.

And if you look up, you’ll also catch a glimpse of Gallery 881’s refreshed space, including our brightened ceiling and new air conditioning. ❄️

We’re open today until 5 pm and Saturday from noon to 5 pm. Saturday, September 5, is the final day of One in a Million.
