Liz Garbus and Elizabeth Wolff bring us the documentary film GIVE ME THE BALL!, a uniquely intimate portrayal of tennis legend and trailblazer Billie Jean King that reveals the inner turmoil behind the immense sacrifices she made to transform her sport and the world. Through a trove of rarely seen archival material and powerfully honest interviews with King, this film explores the depths of agony she endured so that others might follow a less painful path.

Saturday, Oct 24 at the Industry Forum brings you a chance to explore St. John's before diving into more panels:

Morning Tours — Saturday morning gives you a chance to decompress and take in the ever giving and beautiful St. John’s surroundings. Sign up for the popular SJIWFF Locations Bus Tour, that makes stops at Cape Spear, Quidi Vidi and more. Or, lace up your sneakers and join a guided hike of the Signal Hill Trail.

Meet THE SNAKE — No spoilers please before we slither into Closing Night with this new award-winning comedy written by and starring Newfoundland’s own Susan Kent (THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES) with director Jenna MacMillan (WHO'S YER FATHER?) and producers Sharlene Kelly (AWW SHUCKS) and Melani Wood (BONE CAGE). Moderated by Deanne Foley (AN AUDIENCE OF CHAIRS).

The Vertical Shot — Micro dramas are reaching audiences faster than the industry can keep up. These bite-sized stories are creating new opportunities for training, experimentation, development, and, of course, the almighty dollar. We’re taking a closer look with Monika Dalman (Vertical Film & Short Series Alliance), Mars Horodyski (WORKIN’ MOMS), Samantha MacAdam (PROM NIGHT) and Stephanie Wilson Chapin (YouTube Canada). Moderated by Ife Alaba (FISH OUT OF WATER).

The Industry Forum on Friday, Oct 23 challenges what the future of filmmaking could look like:

The Directorial Path — Making a film is one thing. Figuring out what comes next is another. Our guest directors come together to share what it means to build a life in filmmaking, from taking on a first feature to finding new ways to grow, create, and keep going. Featuring Aisling Chin-Yee (THE REST OF US), Aisha Evelyna (SEAHORSE), Luis De Filippis (SOMETHING YOU SAID LAST NIGHT), Nyla Innuksuk (IN THE HEART OF THE SOUTH) and Chandler Levack (ROOMMATES). Moderated by writer and media educator, Sara Swain.

Reclaiming the Frame — Carrie Fisher famously said, “Men don’t age better than women, they’re just allowed to age.” But who gets to be seen, who gets to work, and who gets to stay in the frame? Join Max Brady (Bodacious Film), Ella Cooper (Black Women Film), Dr. Susan Liddy (WIFT-International), and Andria Wilson Mirza (Producer & Media Advocacy Leader) for a candid conversation about representation, power, and patriarchy - and what we can do to change the system.

Making Work Work — What if the things we think of as exceptions became the new normal? From accessible production practices to more sustainable ways of working, small changes can make the screen industries more inclusive for disabled artists and caregivers. But changing how we work can still meet resistance. With Susie Burpee (Balancing Act), storyteller and facilitator, Ophira Calof (Disabled Producer’s Lab), Melanie Hoyes (Senior Director of Inclusion, British Film Institute) and Winnie Luk (Disability Screen Office). Moderated by educator and community advocate, Ana Pitol.
