My younger sister sent me this video clip and wow does it ever hit home. As a young girl, I witnessed my mom, my grandmother, friend’s moms and so many others enslaved by diet culture throughout their entire lives. I can actually pinpoint the first time I considered dieting to be smaller and that was when I was 12 years old. For some reason society has always been telling women in order to be feminine, we are to make ourselves as tiny as possible. I have a lot of theories and opinions about that matter that I am not going to write at this moment, as my goal is not to divide the sexes but to empower women to make ourselves stronger and healthier. This woman in the video is 100 % correct. We need to change our mindset from thin to strong. As I get closer and closer to age 50, it is becoming increasingly important to me to maintain a healthy amount of muscle and strength. As we age, all of us lose muscle mass and bone density at an alarming rate if we do not continue to maintain an active lifestyle which includes weightbearing and muscle strengthening exercises. we also know that eating a balanced diet, cutting back on alcohol, managing stress and quitting smoking is so important for our overall health. In this age, we have the knowledge that building muscle makes our everyday tasks more manageable and active living at an advanced age more attainable. Who doesn’t want an easier life? Ladies reading this………..building muscle is not going to make you look like less feminine. Building muscle is crucial for your overall health, independence and longevity. I am not going to speak for anyone else here but I personally would like to have a long healthy and independent life for as long as possible.
