This week our team spent some time in the water with Chris and Harrison from Chris Adair completing and updating our Free Diving certifications and safety training!

🌊 We love getting outside during the busy season and always recommend our visitors get certified before venturing out into the local waters.
🛟 Living in a remote area with limited resources, encourages our team to be extra prepared and safety oriented.

Our volunteers are the heart of the Ucluelet Aquarium 🩵
We are very grateful for all of their hard work, dedication, and support. Swipe through to meet a few of our amazing volunteers!

Emily – A future marine biologist and local Heartwood School student, Emily’s passion for the ocean shines through in everything she does. She even saved up her own money to purchase one of the aquarium’s donation fish scales on the outside of our building, a wonderful show of her dedication to supporting marine education.

Silvio – A summer Parks Canada team member, Silvio spends his weekends volunteering at the aquarium as one of our fantastic interpreters. His natural ability to connect with visitors and share his enthusiasm for marine life creates memorable experiences for guests of all ages.

Jes – Jes has been a dedicated aquarium volunteer for years, contributing hundreds of volunteer hours annually. Their ongoing commitment, reliability, and passion for our mission have made an incredible impact on both our team and our visitors.

Faeryn – Faeryn joined us over the winter, helping prepare the aquarium for the season, and hasn’t stopped volunteering since! Whether she’s cleaning tanks, interpreting for visitors, or representing us in the Ukee Days Parade, her enthusiasm and commitment make her an invaluable part of our team.

Chris – You may know Chris as our local WildSafeBC representative, but he’s also one of the aquarium’s talented volunteers. A gifted artist, Chris has designed and hand-drawn many of the beautiful new chalkboard signs you’ll see throughout the aquarium, helping bring our exhibits to life.

Casey – We were fortunate to have Casey volunteer with us this spring. A knowledgeable interpreter and incredibly hardworking team member, Casey brought positivity, dedication, and a genuine love of learning to every shift.

Ariel – A summer Parks Canada team member, Ariel spends her weekends volunteering at the aquarium while completing a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Health, along with a certificate in American Sign Language. A passionate swimmer who loves connecting with people, she brings warmth, energy, and enthusiasm to every visitor interaction.

Bring your best “arf,” “ow-ow-ow,” or full-blown marina showdown and see if you can impress the judges - or at least get a good laugh from the crowd. Bonus points for volume, commitment, and dramatic flipper flair… just don’t be surprised if a real sea lion answers back. Costumes encouraged.

📣NEW SIGNAGE for our exhibits!

Our new labels feature tactile, colour-coded elements and are installed at a lower height, making it easier for more visitors to explore and engage with our exhibits.

This project was made possible through the collaboration of Meredith, our Science Communications Lead, volunteer graphic designer Jonathan Lee (check out his work at the 🔗 in our bio) and Paul, our Life Support Systems, who created the sign mounts. A special thank you to .sign.group for printing the labels on durable, long-lasting material.

Accessibility is an important part of how we share science, and we’re always looking for ways to make our exhibits more inclusive. Be sure to check them out on your next visit!

Recently, a team of aquarium staff and volunteers conducted surveys of four major eelgrass beds around Ucluelet Harbour.

We mapped the boundaries of the beds and recorded observations of dozens of species that call eelgrass beds home. This project is part of our larger goal of understanding what makes our harbour healthy and improving community stewardship of the space.

For more information about our Healthy Harbour Project, follow the link in our bio!
