In 1988, earth scientist Guy Plint was conducting sedimentary studies around Tumbler Ridge, examining 86-million-year-old formations, when, unbeknownst to him, he unearthed duck-billed dinosaur tracks.

Something is going to smell shell-fishy this week with the Kaskapau Formation being looked at! Quality Canyon is one of our favourite hikes with its 160m cliffs bearing the marine sand and mudstones of the Kaskapau Formation, formed out on the swampy delta that stretched out into the growing and expanding Boreal Sea in the middle of the Cretaceous.

Go see the Lobster found there at the Tumbler Ridge Museum or come ask Roy about deltas and the landscape of Tumbler Ridge 100 million years ago.

Rock of The Day: Bentonite

Volcanic Clay - Bentonite is typically formed from the weather of volcanic ash in sea water

A Key To The Deformation Of The Boulder Creek Formation - Due to Boulder Creek Formation sitting on a layer of bentonite and due to to bentonite's ability to absorb water and swell it has led to the Boulder Creek Formation to slowly slide down and break apart.

Used To Help Reduce The Impact Of Soil Degradation - Bentonite has mixed into soil in certain areas of Thailand and has show to have reduced the effects of soil degradation allowing for higher crop yields.

A Key Canadian Import - Despite Canada being a major producer of aluminum Canada is not a major producer of Bauxite leading to it being a major Canadian import.

A Source of Gallium - Bauxite is a major source of Gallium.

Rich In Uranium - Uraninite is rich in uranium and is a major source of the element.

Product Of Saskatchewan - Northern Saskatchewan is home to large deposits of Uraninite and Canada is one of the largest producers of Uranium.

Used In The Discovery of Uranium - A deposit of Uraninite was used in 1789 in the discovery of the element uranium.
