I’ve spent more than 25 years in the music business, and one problem keeps coming back: it can be surprisingly difficult to answer a simple question — who owns this song?

That’s what led me to build Music Rights Passport (MRP).

musicrightspassport.com

MRP is designed to give every composition a living record of its writers, splits, publishers, confirmations, registrations, recordings and supporting documents — all in one place.

It’s still in beta, and I’m learning a lot from watching real people use it.

If you’re a songwriter, composer, publisher or music professional, please don’t hesitate to sign up, try it out and send us your feedback before the official launch next month. Your feedback at this stage can genuinely help shape the app.

I wrote a little more on Medium about why I built MRP, the problem I’m trying to solve, and where I hope to take it:

AI didn’t kill music creation — but it completely changed the conversation around ownership, copyright, and trust.

In my latest article, I explore:
• why human authorship still matters
• the legal grey areas surrounding AI-generated music
• why brands and music supervisors are becoming more cautious
• and how AI may actually increase the value of trusted human-created music

A realistic look at where the industry stands in 2026.

Choosing the right music for an ad campaign is not just a creative decision, it’s a strategic one.

In this new article, I break down the three main music licensing options agencies consider:

• Licensing a famous song
• Creating a new version of a known track
• Using production music

(Note: this article does not cover another common option—commissioning custom music with a composer—which I’ll address separately.)

Each approach comes with different implications in terms of cost, control, timing, and exclusivity.

Understanding these differences can make or break a campaign.
