The federal government is putting $100 million toward Canada's steel industry — covering half the cost of shipping Canadian-made steel by rail or water across the country for the next year.

The goal: make it cheaper and easier for Canadian manufacturers to buy steel made right here at home, supporting jobs from Hamilton to the West Coast.

Some Canadian airports could soon have their skies watched from hundreds of kilometres away. Nav Canada is testing new technology that combines AI and remote cameras — letting controllers see three times farther than binoculars, all without a physical tower on-site.

It's part of a bigger push to solve Canada's air traffic controller shortage, which has caused delays at major airports over the past two summers.

A man is recovering after a grizzly bear encounter in the backcountry near Pemberton, B.C. Conservation officers say it was a defensive, close-range surprise encounter, and he's expected to be okay. Warning signs are now going up in the area.

If you're heading into bear country this month, here's what officers recommend:
1️⃣ Make noise as you walk, especially in low-visibility areas
2️⃣ Travel in groups whenever possible
3️⃣ Carry bear spray and know how to use it
4️⃣ Keep dogs leashed
5️⃣ Never approach wildlife — give bears plenty of room

Thousands of B.C. residents are still displaced after the Bald Range wildfire tore through the Summerland and Peachland area last week, with a provincial state of emergency now in place. Evacuation centres in Penticton have been overwhelmed with support — neighbours opening their homes, volunteers organizing supplies, and communities across the Okanagan pulling together during one of the toughest fire seasons in years.

Mark your calendars! The night of August 12–13 brings one of the best skywatching events in years — the peak of the Perseid meteor shower paired with a partial solar eclipse, visible across much of Canada. The Canadian Space Agency calls the Perseids "the best meteor shower of the year," and this year there's no moonlight to wash out the view since it lines up with a new moon.

Best viewing tip: get away from city lights after midnight and look toward the northeast. Are you planning to stay up and watch?

Proud moment for Canada! Colonel Joshua Kutryk, a former fighter pilot who grew up on a cattle farm in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, is preparing to launch to the International Space Station aboard NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 mission this September. It'll be his first spaceflight, and he'll spend six months in orbit conducting medical research and operating the Canadian-built Canadarm2 — following in the footsteps of Chris Hadfield and David Saint-Jacques.

Doesn't it fill you with pride to see a Canadian heading to the stars? 🇨🇦🚀
