The Cabaret Company

The Cabaret Company The Cabaret Company produces the work of Sky Gilbert which is a personal, immediate, controversial, It is alive, breathing and, at times, a little scary.

Cabaret Company’s mandate is to produce work created by Sky Gilbert and to encourage the work and development of q***r theatre newcomers. Cabaret Company has produced many different kinds of plays, from drag musicals to murder mysteries to documentary biographies. “My work is always personal and immediate, controversial, political, dangerous and sexual,” says Sky Gilbert, Artistic Director of Caba

ret Company, “these are elements that define ‘cabaret’ for me, hence the name.”

Like his novels, which are frank and chatty explorations of the modern q***r urban lifestyle and the hypocrisies of modern middle-class life, Cabaret Company productions will always reach out to a contemporary audience. In contrast to theatre companies such as Tarragon, Soulpepper, and Canadian Stage that present world-class respected literature by mainstream-approved authors drawn from the traditional canon of new and old works – (European, American and Canadian), The Cabaret Company’s Canadian- centred work achieves its immediacy and danger in varied ways, sometimes by knocking down the fourth wall and at other times by presenting pro-sexual content without judgment. Ultimately, the work doesn’t resemble "literature" or "drama". Young q***r artists are encouraged through the OAC Creators’ Reserve Program, as well as through our development programs for young q***r artists: The Kitchen Party Nervous Breakdown Reality TV Show, Free Jane, and GenderPlay.

Cabaret Company is now accepting submissions to this year's Kitchen Party Nervous Breakdown Reality TV Show.

Kitchen Party will feature 10 young self-identified q***r non-union actors creating q***r characters through improvisation -- working with Sky Gilbert.

The plot is this: we are at party in someone's kitchen and 6 q***r couples are having arguments. One person will blow -- that is have a kind of breakdown. Who will it be? After watching approximately one half hour of the piece the audience will vote, and see if they are right or wrong when somebody goes nuts.
Here are the practical details. It's a three day workshop and one day performance. The performance will be for one night only for an invited audience of established theatre people (to expose all you talented ones to lots of producers, artistic directors, etc..). The piece will be videotaped so that we can turn this into a 20-minute episode to be put on the web. You will be paid a small honorarium for the workshop and for the performance.
The dates for rehearsal are May 25-29 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during the day with a performance the Monday evening.

To submit, please send your headshot and resume to [email protected].
