ARTHUR MILLER FIVE FACTS:
- Arthur Miller is one of the most celebrated playwrights of the 20th century with productions of All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953) and A View from the Bridge (1955)
- Miller was awarded the 1949 Pulitzer Prize (Death of a Salesman) and earned multiple Tony and New York Drama Critics' Circle awards
- Miller was famously married to Marilyn Monroe for just 5 years in an unlikely match the press dubbed "beauty and the brains"
- Miller testified as part of the McCarthy trials before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1956. While he admitted to attending meetings of Communist party writers, he refused to "name names" of others who had attended. He was found guilty of contempt of Congress but the verdict was overturned a year later and he did not serve any time in jail
- Miller had four children over two of his three marriages: Jane and Robert (with his first wife, Mary Slattery), and Rebecca and Daniel (with his third wife, Inge Morath); Daniel was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth and Miller placed him into a state-run institution in Connecticut and rarely visited him, choosing to keep his existence hidden from the public.
