At the 98th Academy Awards, cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by becoming the first woman, and the first woman of color, to win Best Cinematography in the category’s nearly 100-year history.

She accepted her Oscar with a powerful speech honoring women in film.

She won for her striking work on Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.

Arkapaw’s large-format visuals, shot using IMAX and 70mm film, helped define the movie’s haunting Southern Gothic atmosphere, marking a major milestone for representation behind the camera.

Nigerian Canadian writer, director, entrepreneur, and storyteller, Toffy’s work lives at the intersection of film, purpose, and impact. Through emotionally grounded narratives exploring identity, migration, faith, and belonging, she creates stories that build empathy and spark real conversations.

Her short film Away From Home, created through the Netflix Being Black in Canada program, screened across multiple cities and opened up dialogue around the international student experience. Beyond film, she is also the co-founder of PayBridge, building cross-border financial infrastructure that reflects her commitment to solving real world problems through both storytelling and innovation.

From First Class science graduate to filmmaker and fintech founder, Toffy embodies courage, reinvention, and creative leadership. She is passionate about inspiring others to pursue their calling without waiting for permission — and we cannot wait for you to hear her perspective.👏🏽
