โ€œA Moment in Autumn: a threaded memory zine workshop" aims to explore the impact of an embodied experience by taking a moment in autumn to reflect, de-stress and practice self-care. In this workshop, participants will be divided into smaller groups to work alongside each other to make a zine about care, cherishing the fleeting of time, or celebration of the harvest. Each participant will be able to bring home their completed zine, alongside knowledge of zine-making, binding, and working with different analog materials.

This workshop is facilitated by interdisciplinary artists Kayla Eli (she/her) and Melanie Yan (she/they), two OCAD Graduate students based in Toronto. After bonding over zine-making and illustration, they felt eager to present their shared knowledge to the public, bringing the joy of making and sharing memories.

Xpace Cultural Centre acknowledges Wednesday, September 30th as The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. To observe this day, we are closed today and will return to normal open hours tomorrow.

We stand in solidarity with residential school survivors and their families, recognizing and acknowledging the devastating and lasting impacts of this history. While this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is not yet recognized as a statutory holiday by the Ontario government, Xpace recognizes it as such and will continue to do so every year.

This year at Xpace, the team participated in a land acknowledgment workshop led by Natalie King and are reviewing our land acknowledgement to ensure it is most accurate to our current relationship with the land and its Indigenous peoples. We are also using this opportunity to reflect further on the ways that our organization can implement these values into other aspects of our ongoing practice of solidarity.

In our bio are links to several resources for our community members to engage with. Take time today to reflect, learn, and show active support for the Indigenous community.

โ€œIn the exhibition, the gallery space, often a static arena, becomes one of movement through Leeโ€™s examination of -๋‹ค๊ฐ€ (-daga): a clear acrylic chair scrapes against clay in a state of dryness that halts and resists its motion. As the clay continues to dry over the course of the 6-week exhibition, it shrinks and fractures into plate-like slabs. The chairโ€™s continued movement causes the slabs to be pushed, displaced, and broken down into a granular form. Resonant sound waves permeate the air, vibrating with deep reverberation. Itโ€™s the noise that is the most overwhelming. The sound is domineering, filling the space with a low-pitched grinding that can be felt in the chest.โ€

โ€œThrough the construction of the airplane, Song explores mimicry as an evolutionary strategy and form of longing. In Budgie Heaven, airplanes embody the human desire to fly. The plane in turn borrows from the form of a bird to make this possible. While planes mimic birds to move freely through the skies, the plane cannot feel what it is like to experience flying as the bird can.โ€

โ€œBlending her own personal familial archives with those of strangers, Natalie Obregonโ€™s exhibition presented in the Main Space at Xpace Cultural Centre, Your face, your eyes, and your mouth, approaches memory as a slippery substance that perpetually escapes our grasp. Using online public archives to source photographs of families and interpreting their likeness via oil paint on wood or burlap, and image transfers on film, Obregonโ€™s work plays with the distinction between artificial and real intimacies as they pertain to family records.โ€

โ€œThe raw material of Gerbasiโ€™s previous work is the image itself. Drawing from an archive of digital representations of women, the artistโ€™s glitchy transformations of the shapely figures are meditations on the construction + commodification of femininity = the debris of an inescapable online ecosystem. While the artist retains a formal apparatus that superimposes images of varying opacity over one another, Scission presents something more unbridled and elemental.โ€
