So what is the MUD Wheel Basics: Intro to Wheel Throwing class all about, and who should take this class?

This four week course is perfect for beginners to the wheel or anyone coming back to clay after a break who's looking for a refresher. In week 1 & 2, you throw on the wheel and focus on your technique as you center your clay and pull up walls into cylinders (and maybe also bowls). In week 3, you trim the pots you've thrown and do anything else that should be done in this "leatherhard" stage (such as attaching handles or surface decoration). In week 4, your bisque fired pieces are ready for glazing!

Our studio is fully equipped with all of the tools and equipment you need, including a wide variety of glazes and a guaranteed spot at a wheel for every single student. You don't need to purchase or bring anything, just wear some comfy clothing you don't mind getting some clay on! (Yes, the clay washes out. Promise.) So if you're interested in trying pottery but not ready for a huge commitment without seeing if you actually enjoy it, this class is perfect for you.

What do you need to bring to your class at MUD? Trick question - nothing! (Well, maybe a hair tie/clip if you have long hair. If you've ever seen a viral video of a potter's luscious locks getting sucked into their clay on the wheel, you'd understand why this is an essential.)

We've got tools, aprons, and a guaranteed wheel for every student! Everything is provided for you when you show up to class, because we want our students to be able to focus on learning and being creative.

A selection of some of the (many) tools at MUD - organized into bundles for basic, intermediate, advanced, and texture. Can you spot your favourite tool? Or something that you've never tried using?

We have WAY more gadgets than what's pictured here, and everything is available to use to all of our students, so it can be a bit overwhelming when you're staring at the tool wall. We wanted to highlight some curated tools for a few different levels.

If you have a die-hard favourite item, or an essential tool-that's-not-a-tool-but-is-a-tool (takeout chopstick, we're looking at you!), we'd love to know what it is in the comments!

The limit of what you can do with ceramics isn't your skill level, because your skills can always be improved (which is what our experienced instructors are there to help with in a class). The limit is what the clay itself is capable or not capable of. At MUD, we want our students to succeed in making whatever it is they want to make, and that starts with an understanding of the material - and an open mind, of course!
