Myanmar’s health care system has been hollowed out over decades by juntas that prioritized weapons over health budgets. While there was some progress on disease control during a civilian government, that was reversed when the military took back power in 2021.

Fighting has caused the spread of illnesses like malaria and cholera. In a worst-case scenario, the situation could threaten regional health security, experts say.

"Then, in zooming out to right now, polarization is getting really extreme all over the world. We’re seeing many places tip toward authoritarianism, which thrives on fear. It thrives on division and dehumanization. It asks us to really distrust each other and shut down our empathy. I wanted to combat that, and say no to that way of thinking and behaving. There’s a need for a feeling of safety or refuge, of interconnectedness, and a trust that we can have some kind of shared understanding, rather than fracturing." Erin Kamler

(RNS) — In her newest album, musician Erin Kamler draws from Buddhist and Jewish mantras that speak to compassion and empathy in the face of suffering.

"The Trump administration’s refugee suspension and foreign aid freeze are upending efforts to address one of the world’s most dire humanitarian crises. Not too long ago, Myanmar was an icon of democratic reform lauded by the West. Today, four years after the military toppled an elected government, it is an international pariah largely unchecked as it bombs its own civilians."

President Trump’s moves to pause refugee resettlement, freeze foreign aid and suspend funds to promote democracy have added more chaos to one of the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises.

“Trump last week paused development assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development for 90 days to assess compatibility with his "America First" policy.

The freeze has thrown the global aid sector, which is heavily funded by the U.S., into chaos.”

Healthcare centres serving tens of thousands of refugees on the Thai-Myanmar border have been ordered shut after U.S. President Donald Trump froze most foreign aid last week, forcing Thai officials to transport the sickest patients to other facilities. The International Rescue Committee (IRC), which...

"The country of 55 million people has been in turmoil since February 2021 when the military ousted the popular administration of Nobel laureate and NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, citing fraud in an election it won two months earlier by a landslide."

The census data collected between Oct. 1-15 will be used to hold a general election next year, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing told a meeting on Sunday, state media reported.
