The Chambers of Nastaran Mirsadegh is on view until May 30th!

The Chambers is an episodic recounting of excitement, grief, and uncertainty, moving through Nastaran Mirsadegh’s imagined spaces. This new body of work is quite different from her earlier practice, as it adds a physical dimension to her intensely psychological practice. The works in this series were created in pairs and planned to be installed face-to-face on opposing walls, creating an invisible chamber that envelops the viewer. She didn’t begin the series with this concept, rather the idea emerged after she finished the first piece. She realized that she already had the entire space envisioned, and that she was itching to reveal more. She then painted the opposing viewpoint, expanding the imagined environment, and thus, The Chambers were born.

The women, carefully stepping into dark waters, came first. “I was instinctively sketching with charcoal when these two women quickly manifested themselves to me. I wanted the atmosphere to be grey, foggy and dead. Even the man’s body appears to have atrophied. For the counterpiece, however, I deliberately used warmer hues and a more energetic composition despite the fact that they are farther from shore. I thought perhaps the shore they’ve reached isn’t even in the living world, given how the colors have changed, and how the only surviving man displays no signs of excitement. Maybe they were all summoned towards this shore by a greater force and just their sheer will.”
