Cowley Abbott is privileged to be entrusted with a collection of artworks from The Canadian Club Brand Centre, a building with a rich history in the development of Windsor and Canadian Club whisky. The Brand Centre in Walkerville, Ontario, opened in 1894 as the headquarters of Canadian Club Whisky. The imposing red brick and terra cotta building is considered one of North America’s finest examples of Italian Renaissance architecture. The Centre formerly offered tours of the building, teaching visitors about the origins of the Canadian Club brand and its history, including its art collection. A whisky tasting often concluded the tour. Cowley Abbott is honoured to be offering this art collection linked to a significant part of Windsor’s and Canada’s history.

Following weeks of strongly-attended previews in Calgary, Montreal and Toronto, the Spring Live Auction was a fantastic night of spirited bidding and stellar results recorded for Canadian artwork spanning 184 years (we did the math) and remarkable prices for work by some of the world’s most celebrated artists. The live auction witnessed an 88% sell-through rate with 60% of the artworks sold exceeding the high-end of pre-sale expectation and multiple artist records established, with exquisite artworks by James Pattison Cockburn and Anne Savage fetching prices more than ten times their estimates. View full results of the Spring Live Auction now on our website.

It is auction day!!!

Leading to tonight’s live sale, Rob visited BNN Bloomberg and chatted with Roger Petersen, speaking about the art market and the Canadian auction season.

While speaking about the market for Canadian art, they discussed four highlights of our spring sale: “Paysage du Midi, circa 1900”, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir; “Homme à la Pipe: Portrait du Docteur Gachet, 1890” the rare etching by Vincent Van Gogh; “Wind”, the stunning 1936 canvas by Emily Carr and Lawren Harris’ captivating “Above Coldwell Bay, North Shore, Lake Superior (Lake Superior Sketch XV), 1925”.

The auction begins at 7:00 pm EDT this evening at Toronto’s Globe & Mail Centre. Attend the auction in person or follow our live stream at CowleyAbbott.ca (the link will be active this afternoon and we will also link it in our bio).

Thank you to all who have shared the excitement of this season with us, it has been our pleasure to share this selection of fine Canadian and international artwork!

Between 1919 and 1923, Franklin Carmichael’s artistic practice was largely based on the geography between Orillia and his home in Lansing. Unlike his peers in the Group of Seven, Carmichael did not join their Algoma Box Car trips between 1918 and 1920 or with their trips to Lake Superior in the beginning of 1921. For Carmichael, his subject of interest was much closer to home in the City of Orillia where he and his wife Ada lived beginning in 1919. Between 1920 and 1924, Carmichael’s focus was on developing his painting skills using the fall landscape. Here in “Autumn Landscape”, radiant pinks, oranges and yellows contrast against the perennial greenery and sun-filled blue sky. Emblematic of this work, A. Y. Jackson, a dear friend of Carmichael, would describe him as a “lyrical painter of great ability”.

🖼️: Franklin Carmichael, Autumn Landscape, circa early 1920s, Auction Estimate: $80,000 - $100,000.
