Playwright Marin Ireland joined us from New York as PRE-EXISTING CONDITION got on its feet at the Coal Mine 🖤

Marin spent time in the room with director Linda Kash and cast Amy Rutherford, Lindsay Leese, Diana Bentley and Philip Riccio, talking through the play and watching this version begin to take shape.

Meanwhile, another production of the play is in rehearsal Off-Off Broadway, giving Marin the rare chance to watch two very different productions of her play take shape at the same time.

Meet "A", played by Amy Rutherford.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITION is her story.

Marin Ireland’s funny, frank and fiercely human play follows A in the aftermath of a life-altering, harmful relationship, as she tries to figure out what moving forward actually looks like. Through friends, therapists, lawyers and the people she meets along the way, she talks about what happened. And sometimes, she really doesn’t want to talk about it at all.

Because healing is complicated.

Some things are everywhere. We’re just not very good at talking about them. At The Coal Mine, we’ve always liked a play that starts a conversation. This one goes straight to something we don’t talk about nearly enough, with a surprising amount of humour along the way.

Director Linda Kash touches on why Marin Ireland’s characters are known only as A, B, C and D, how much of ourselves we might recognize in them, and why this conversation matters.
