one of my favourite pieces on display in the ‘Radical Stitch’ exhibit. this piece is by Jobena Petonoquot
to be a little vulnerable for a minute, i have dealt with a good amount of ‘bullying’ and ignorant comments (especially recently on social media) about being white and not being the stereotypical version of what non-Indigenous people want a Native person to look like. these comments are always passive aggressive, hurtful and rude, and NEVER ask the right question - ‘who are your relations?’
i think it is so so important to be able to confidently communicate to other people who you are, where you come from and who your relations are. those are some of the most important questions you need to answer as a Native person. and for random trolls on the internet to claim that i am not Native or not Native enough because i’m not brown or because i have an alternative style is such bu****it. i try to not let it get to me, because i know who i am, i know where i come from, and i have SO MANY community members that vouch for my existence and contribution to community over my years (both in my home community and in ‘ottawa’, my current community). but it is still hard to see.
i think this piece also speaks a lot to the current epidemic of pretendians, and of folks purposefully profiting off of their Native identity without being active members of community. we need to be having more of these conversations. we can’t be scared. these questions NEED to be asked. of course there are nuances to the conversation, such as those scooped or those with intergenerational trauma, but if someone can’t answer these questions they need to think about why they feel the need to represent a community they are not involved in.
chii miigwetch Jobena for this beautiful piece and for starting this conversation. i can’t wait to see more of your works in the future 🖤
