Happy World Animal Day!

Ripley's Aquarium of Canada is grateful and proud to have the privilege to educate our guests on the amazing animals throughout the world's lakes and ocean, as well as spread awareness of threatened species, and support and encourage marine life conservation!

We are proud to be accredited by CAZA (Canada's Accredited of Zoos and Aquariums) and AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums), as well as a member of WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums)! This means that we meet the highest standards and are leaders in the care and conservation of wildlife as well as education. We couldn't achieve these honourable accreditations without our husbandry department who monitor the safety and well-being of our animals through daily animal care and veterinary programs, as well as our aquarium's conservation, education, and safety standards!

You can read more about all of our aquarium's efforts toward ocean and animal conservation on our website 🦈

Take a moment today to appreciate this world's stunning wildlife, and consider what you can do to and make a positive impact on their lives!

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

A time to honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities, and remember the children who never returned home. This reconciliation requires acknowledging the historic and intergenerational impact that the residential school system created, and the importance of reconnecting communities with their land and culture in their healing.

Today we wear orange because every child matters. As we reflect on this day, we are reminded that this is a continuous journey of listening, learning, and supporting. By wearing orange, we are showing a commitment to a better future on this shared land where we can all live together in peace in honour of the children who were lost.

Let’s feed the axolotls with our aquarist, Sydney!

Today they are being target fed earthworms with a pair of tongs 🪱

Axolotls don’t have teeth like we do 🦷 They have very small vestigial teeth that are only for gripping their food instead of chewing or tearing, so they swallow their food whole. Axolotls eat using suction which they make by opening and closing their mouths very quickly!

Sometimes live grass shrimps are added to the exhibit for the axolotls to find themselves. They hunt by detecting movement and using their keen sense of smell. This is a great form of enrichment that encourages the axolotl’s natural feeding and hunting behaviours!

🤩 Thanks a-LOTL Sydney for letting us watch this awesome behind-the-scenes feed!
