Canvas Gallery is a vibrant visual arts venue with a constantly changing inventory of about 1,200 original works by more than 120 established and emerging Canadian artists. Opened in late October of 2003 by husband and wife Mark Hunter & Megan Less, the gallery was their answer to what they felt was a need for accessible original art in the Toronto area. We offer an impressive selection and variet

y of original pieces to first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike. Paintings, photography, encaustic & mixed media pieces as well as works on paper are presented in a casual non-intimidating atmosphere where customers are encouraged to flip through the work at their own pace. All works are available to be taken on approval to try at home before purchasing.

Patricia Clemmens rolled in from her studio in Oro-Medonte, Ontario Friday morning with six gorgeous new paintings — and, as always, orders from her boys for their favourite sandwiches from our neighbours at .to. Apparently it’s officially a tradition now.
And then we unpacked these.
Big skies. Huge clouds. Open roads. Quiet lakes. Patricia takes the Ontario landscape and strips it down to these wonderful shapes and bands of colour — bright blues, soft lavender, green and those little hits of electric pink that seem to run through everything.
There’s something about these paintings that just makes you want to sit down and enjoy the view.
The three larger works are especially stunning. The reflections almost double the sky and give the paintings this incredible sense of space, while the smaller road paintings feel like little snapshots of an Ontario summer drive — windows down, nowhere you particularly need to be.

The rest of Annette Kraft van Ermel’s new work has arrived — and wow, what a group.
Last week we introduced Annette’s wonderful new bee paintings, and this week Megan made the trip to Annette’s Waterloo studio to pick up the larger pieces we’d been waiting for.
And they were definitely worth the wait.
These new paintings are loose, joyful and absolutely bursting with colour. Annette takes familiar floral forms and pushes them toward abstraction — big gestural marks, layers of pink, coral, orange, blue and green, and just enough suggestion of flowers to let your eye fill in the rest.
We especially love how the larger works completely change a room. They have presence, but there’s also something wonderfully light and fresh about them.
The full collection is now at Canvas — from the little bees that arrived last week to these bold new abstract florals and large-scale paintings.

You can’t help but feel good looking at these.
Cobie Cruz dropped by the gallery on Friday with five new paintings — all verticals and all absolutely exploding with colour.
Big blues, electric greens, pinks, purples, orange and yellow all pushing up against each other. There’s a looseness and spontaneity to Cobie’s work that we love — you can almost feel him working things out on the canvas as he goes.
There’s no real plan when he starts. Colours appear, disappear, get painted over and come back again until everything somehow finds its place.
For us, though, these paintings are really about energy, optimism and happiness.
They’re bright, confident and just plain fun to look at.

Dana Cowie is back with four big new paintings — and they’re pretty spectacular.
Dana came down from Collingwood with these large-scale, heavily textured oils, and they have so much energy in person. Layers and layers of paint, big confident marks and incredible colour — soft pinks and corals in one, cool blues and greens in another, with little hits of unexpected colour everywhere.
There’s something loose and almost abstract about them, but you can still find the landscape underneath it all. And the texture is amazing — the paint literally comes off the canvas.
We’ve worked with Dana for 18 years and we’ve always loved both her work and the energy she brings with her. These four are some of our favourites yet.
Definitely paintings that need to be seen in person.

Canvas Gallery is looking for a Gallery Administrator / Sales Assistant to join our small, busy and creative team.
Someone who loves art and design.
Someone who enjoys people and is great with clients.
Someone with a good eye for interiors, graphics and social media.
Someone comfortable with Photoshop, computers and learning new things.
Someone who can work independently, but also loves being part of a team.
And because gallery life isn’t all sitting behind a desk — you’ll need to be comfortable with basic tools, climbing a ladder and lifting up to 40 lbs!
Most importantly, we’re looking for a self-starter with personality, curiosity and a genuine interest in art who would like to grow with us for the long term.
Canvas has been part of Toronto’s art community since 2003, representing more than 80 Canadian artists — and we’d love to find the right person to become part of what we do.

Loading up the truck with colour.

An early morning studio visit with Christian McLeod today — and I came back with a truck full of some pretty incredible new work.
Christian has been with Canvas for 21 years, and I’ve seen a lot of his paintings come through our doors, but this group really blew me away. The colour is wild — pinks, turquoise, orange, deep blues and yellows — sometimes exploding out from the centre like enormous flowers, and in others scraped, layered and broken apart into pure abstraction.
There’s a reason there’s so much movement in Christian’s work. He talks about looking at the landscape from a distance — where harbours, rivers, buildings, foliage and roads begin to merge into one larger form — and then breaking that image back down into its individual “particles.”
And you can really see that in these paintings. Paint is poured, pushed, scraped and layered across the canvas. Some areas feel almost liquid, others thick and textured. Your eye never really settles in one place — it keeps moving through the colour.
Christian once described his goal as filling a canvas with enough “chaotic beauty” to give you a lifetime of looking. That seems particularly fitting with this new group.
After more than two decades of working together, it’s still a great feeling to leave an artist’s studio genuinely excited about what we’re bringing back to the gallery.
The truck was definitely a little more colourful on the drive home this morning.

A LOT OF LITTLE BEES HAVE LANDED AT CANVAS 🐝
We received a plethora of small works from Annette Kraft van Ermel last week, and for fans of her bee series, I don’t think these will last long.
This new group feels like a real evolution in Annette’s work. The bees are still there — sometimes obvious, sometimes almost disappearing into the painting — but everything has become looser, more abstract and wonderfully colour-filled. Big swaths of pink, turquoise, soft greens and blues are layered with Annette’s wonderful wax-and-oil surfaces, while the unmistakable black and yellow of the bees buzzes in and out of the compositions.
There’s something joyful about them, but the subject still matters. Bees have long fascinated Annette — beautiful, industrious and incredibly important to the natural world, yet increasingly vulnerable.
What I particularly love about these new pieces is how versatile they are. One little painting can completely wake up a small wall, or group three, six or more together and they become an incredible installation. The in-situ shots really show how much impact these small works can have en masse.
Colour, texture, abstraction and just enough bee to keep you looking.
Just beautiful — and all newly arrived at Canvas. 🐝

NEW WORK — SUJESH CHITTY
We had an early morning visit today from Sujesh Chitty, who arrived from Bowmanville with four new Toronto paintings — and these are really something.
Sujesh has such a distinctive way of painting the city. Rainy streets, glowing storefronts, headlights bouncing off wet pavement, people rushing across intersections, dogs being walked, and some of Toronto’s most familiar landmarksall become part of the story.
There’s a wonderful looseness to his brushwork. Up close, the paintings are energetic and almost abstract in places, but step back and suddenly the city comes together. He captures the light, movement and slightly chaotic rhythm of Toronto without making it feel overly polished or photographic.
And it’s especially nice to see his work in these larger formats. They give him room to really open up the streets and let the atmosphere take over.
Originally from Chennai, India and now based in Bowmanville, Sujesh has made Toronto very much his own subject — Union Station, the CN Tower, Old City Hall, Peter & Adelaide and those everyday street moments that somehow feel immediately familiar.

There are artists... and then there’s Sheila Davis.
If you’ve met Sheila, you know exactly what I mean. She arrives with the same energy that’s in her paintings—laughing, telling stories, moving a mile a minute, and somehow leaving everyone smiling. She’s one of those people who makes the gallery a more fun place to be.
She’s also been part of the Canvas family for many years and has built an incredibly loyal following. Once someone buys a Sheila, they usually come back for another.
She just dropped off four new oil-on-panel paintings, and they’re absolutely bursting with life. They don’t simply depict the Ontario landscape—they capture what it feels like to be in it. Wind pushing through the trees. Branches fighting for sunlight. Water, sky, colour and movement all colliding in the best possible way.
Sheila has always said she’s interested in painting the energy of a place rather than a literal view of it, and that’s exactly why her work has such an impact. Every mark seems to be moving. Every colour seems to be competing for your attention. The paintings feel alive.
There’s a wonderful tension in her work—controlled chaos, vibrant colour, and layers that reveal something new every time you look. It’s expressive without ever feeling forced, and joyful without losing its sophistication.
We’re thrilled to have four fresh pieces in the gallery... and yes, Sheila brought enough enthusiasm for about twelve artists.

Marina Nazarova dropped by the gallery this past week while she was in Canada for an artist retreat and left us with this beautiful new portrait, Lady in a Black Dress.
Her anonymous figures always have a quiet mystery to them. Without revealing a face or a story, Marina leaves just enough unsaid for you to bring your own interpretation to the painting. There’s a calmness to her work that draws you in the longer you spend with it.
Lady in a Black Dress measures 27.5 × 19.75 in. and is $1,900. Marina divides her time between Canada and Brazil, and we’re always excited when she manages to stop by with something new.
