BUTCH is a photographic exploration of the liminal space occupied by female masculinity in contemporary communities. SD Holman delineates Butch not as oppositional to Femme and Trans identities, but as an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined. The images honour the mercurial beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the gend
er binary - celebrating the transversal dialectic of female masculinity, unapologetic and undiluted.*
*The plain English version of the art-speak above;
BUTCH: Not like the other girls are photos of the space between, occupied by the big old bull d***s we know. I say Butch not as dissing Femme and Trans folks, but as a general site of struggle against the limited way that women, gender, and sexuality are still defined. The pictures honour the lively and unpredictable beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the two sided gender rule-boys r masculine/ girls r feminine - celebrating and cutting across categories (literally Q***r) and have good debates of manly women, full strength without regret. BUTCH- Not Like The Other Girls, was a public art exhibition in transit shelters throughout Vancouver, Canada from March 2013 - 20 different pieces, 20 different places. Upcoming Tour Stops:
