Announcing our official selection of four incredible young composers, whose pieces we'll be singing in our annual New-Music Reading Session for Young Composers!
Sophia Colpitts is a singer, composer, arranger, and pianist. She sings in the Vancouver Youth Choir and has twice been a member of the BCMEA Honour Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the BC Youth Choir. Her works have been performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Vancouver Cantata Singers, Nabi Vocal Ensemble, Orpheus Male Voice Choir, Egret Choir, and multiple divisions of the Vancouver Youth Choir. She also performs melodica with busking trio The Fiddle Gerbils of Minecraft.
Olly Harms is a young emerging musician from Toronto, avidly involved in choral music as a singer, composer, and conductor at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts and beyond. Beginning studies at the University of Toronto, she is committed to continued growth in her musicianship.
Pauline Boers is an emerging composer studying Composition and Psychology at Western University. Originally from Belgium and later New Zealand before settling in Canada, she uses music to connect across cultures and build community. Drawing on backgrounds in singer-songwriting, collaborative piano, and choral singing, her music prioritizes emotional expression with rich harmonic palettes — expect crunchy chords and (maybe excessive) word-painting.
Noah Ullmann is a Bachelor of Music graduate of Queen's University, where he specialized in composition, conducting, classical percussion, and music education. He has spent the last several years working closely with Canadian composers Dean Burry and John Burge to refine his craft and compositional language.
