We have wrapped our summer in residency at Underscore Projects 🧟‍♀️🖤 We are so grateful for three months filled with deep discoveries, lingering questions, and a full soak in a world full of possibilities for what this new work can be. Mostly we are grateful to La Llorona in all that she has taught us about ourselves and her story throughout the process. Next year we’ll be going back into the pool and and looking forward to sharing more with you all then. Until next time!

Grief is a transformative emotion, but we aren’t allowed to experience or process it anymore. Llorona is teaching us how to open up to the dark as well as the light, as a way of overcoming buried trauma and rage. We are so grateful for the meaningful summer we’ve had so far in residency.

TAURA behind the scenes 🐂🤎✨ 2021

In 2021 we were finally ready to set up for production, and added this wonderful costume designer to our team.

Madeleine LeBlanc is a fibre artist & costume designer based in Toronto. Her work consists of wearable garments and performances which investigate traditional craft skills & techniques. Considering both historical and personal histories around the devaluing of women & craft work, LeBlanc creates art embodying physical, sensorial and emotional labour.

For TAURA she was inspired to re-create an abstract of the bata de cola to see if it could flow as if under water. She also designed a matador jacket to highlight the associations of the matador: human structures, inorganic architecture, mastering the sublime.

The body suits were made through a process of cut fabric appliqué, to both blend in with the natural body while emphasizing its muscle structure. Her goal with these body suits is to feel like an expression of the internal body and to highlight the similarities between human and bull.

From Madeleine, “I see this design as a meeting between human creations and unknowable natural forces; sculptural and organic.”

We love you, Madeleine! Thank you for dressing us with so much care and creativity.

Join us for TAURA’s premiere Oct 12, 2021. Link for pay-what-you-want tickets in our bio!

TAURA behind the scenes 2019

In 2019 we continued developing TAURA in residency at Dancemakers with support from the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario. We added a second bata de cola to the mix and developed more choreography of the bulls in pasture and the afterlife.

Through the Toronto Arts Council, we were also able to commission a choreography by Ilse Gudiño to start developing the character of the matador through contemporary flamenco dance. We worked with the rhythm of the martinete, trying to show the matador outside of the ultra-masculine and more obvious aesthetics of the bullfight.

Join us for the premiere of TAURA October 12!
