One of the things we loved most about Tokyo was stumbling into places we didn’t even plan to visit.

This temple was right across from where we stayed, and one morning we randomly wandered through it before starting the day.

The bright red torii gates immediately caught our attention. In Japan, they symbolize the transition from the everyday world into a sacred space. The vibrant vermillion colour is also believed to protect against evil spirits and was traditionally used to preserve the wood from the elements.

What we loved most was how peaceful it felt in the middle of such a busy city. One minute you’re surrounded by Tokyo energy, and the next you’re walking through quiet pathways under these massive red gates.

Sometimes the unplanned moments end up being the ones you remember most 🇯🇵⛩️

One of our favourite things to do while travelling?
Grocery stores 🇯🇵🍓🍙

As much as we love restaurants, some of the best food experiences in Japan happened during random late-night grocery runs, FamilyMart breakfast hauls, and walking through local markets.

We honestly ate at 7-Eleven like kings every day 😂 From fresh onigiri and egg sandwiches to little desserts and One Cup Sake, everything was top notch. We ended up loving the One Cup Sake so much after trying it there, we even brought it into our venue experience back home.

It’s also one of the best ways to experience everyday culture while travelling. Seeing what people actually eat, cook, and buy daily always teaches you something new.

Safe to say… we brought home way too many snacks 🍜😂

Prepping the rice is one of the most important parts of what we do, and honestly, one of the things we take the most pride in.

From washing and seasoning, to getting the texture just right, every batch is prepared fresh before class so everything is ready and waiting for you when you walk through the doors.

Japan continues to inspire the way we create, host, and experience food 🇯🇵🍣 and we love bringing everything we learn back into our workshops in Toronto.

We never stop learning and growing together

This trip to Tokyo reminded us why we started Roll This Way in the first place, to build a life around creativity, connection, food, and experiences that inspire us.

Some of the best parts of this journey aren’t just the restaurants we discover or the ideas we bring home… it’s having the freedom to explore, create, and grow a business around something we genuinely love.
