Robert Goodnough (1917-2010) was renowned for his compositions that featured confetti-like arrangements of polygons. While associated with the Color Field painting, his earlier works were informed by Abstract Expressionism’s bent towards gestural abstraction. 

“Upward Lift Movement” (acrylic and oil on canvas, 1985) is a fine example of Goodnough favoring a structured, geometric approach after veering away from the lyrical process of Abstract Expressionism. Perhaps implying a once solid surface, bunches of angular pastel shards are energetically arranged across this striking canvas.

Edward Burtynsky’s “Rice Terraces, Western Yunnan Province, China” (digital chromogenic color print, 2013) captures the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces. Spanning a million acres and 4 countries, the terraces have been maintained by the Hani people for over 1,200 years and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The photograph is particularly striking in that it falls almost completely into abstraction. From an aerial perspective, the rice terraces flatten and merge, creating a fluid, waved field of pattern.

Robert Frank (1924–2019) was one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. He transformed documentary photography through his candid, deeply personal approach to image-making.
This portfolio emerged after Frank and his wife, artist June Leaf, established a second home in Mabou, Nova Scotia, in 1970. The region’s rugged landscape and quiet isolation inspired a more introspective body of work, shifting his focus away from the bustling street scenes that had defined his earlier career.
