Good morning, everyone.

As I approach my 65th birthday next January, I stand at the threshold of a new chapter. This is more than a milestone, it’s a moment of intention. A moment to grow stronger, wiser, and more aligned with the person I am becoming.

I am choosing renewal. I am choosing discipline. I am choosing transformation.
Each day is an opportunity to rise higher than yesterday, to refine my body, sharpen my mind, and deepen my spirit. Reinvention is not about changing who I am; it’s about becoming more fully myself.

The next chapter begins now.

A dance between two selves, the real and the imagined. A solitary figure moves through space, speaking and observing the world around them. It is a reflective journey, revealing the roots of my creativity long before I became a dancer. It explores the question: how do you find your path when the world sees you as different?

Belonging: A Movement Workshop for Older Adults - Afro-Brazilian Dance for +55

Join Brazilian dancer Newton Moraes for a welcoming movement workshop that celebrates belonging through dance. Drawing from Afro-Brazilian traditions, as well as Samba and Batuque from southern Brazil, this class invites participants to explore movement in a gentle, accessible, and supportive environment.

The session will begin seated, with guided breathing exercises and isolated movements of the head, arms, torso, and pelvis, allowing participants to gradually connect with their bodies. The workshop will then transition to standing, where simple gestures and movement phrases will be introduced, engaging different parts of the body. Together, participants will learn and practice a short sequence or simple choreography.

Newton has previously led similar workshops at Jammi; in this session, he aims to deepen the sense of connection, both within each participant and across the group. The class will conclude with a calming cool-down and relaxation period, offering time to settle, reflect, and integrate the experience.

I’m Newton Moraes, founder and Artistic Director of Newton Moraes Dance Theatre (NMDT), and I’m thrilled to share that 2026 marks our 29th anniversary. Nearly three decades of creation, resilience, and artistic expression, this milestone deserves a special celebration.

To honor this occasion, we are planning a series of events throughout the year, including a retrospective of selected works from our repertoire, to be presented in Toronto in October 2026. Featured pieces will include IHU, My Dance Is Not a Hobby, and Pais do Futebol. In addition, we are developing a brand-new creation, A New World, to be premiered by the company.

As we prepare for this exciting season, we are raising funds to help cover essential rehearsal and production expenses. We will, of course, be applying for support from arts councils, but community support is vital in helping us bring these works from vision to reality.
