Magicana Sharing Wonder We are dedicated to the exploration and advancement of magic as a performing art.

In addition to our community programming My Magic Hands and Senior Sorcery, reaching out to youth and senior populations, we also produce live theatre, publish books and a journal on magic and its great history, and maintain several online exhibitions for all to enjoy. REMEMBERING THE FUTURE: Exciting news to report

Today, we announce many changes for Magicana. I've put a message together that details everything on our Sharing Wonder blog.

Yes, the biggest change is that Julie Eng will be changing roles at the end of July, and leaving Magicana to join Genii as their new executive director. We are very happy for her as she embarks on her new exciting new adventure!

And that's just one of the big changes we are announcing!

We are delighted to announce that Volumes VII and VIII of The Rich Cabinet Collection are now being packed and shipped!

The incredible feat of completing an annotated collection, which were written over four decades by Dr. Eddie Dawes, now comes to a conclusion with the seventh and eighth volume of The Rich Cabinet Collection. Yes, one volume remains—the index—and that will ship later in the fall, and it also holds a surprise or two!

In the latest books, Volumes VII and VIII, Dr. Dawes continues to illuminate with his gentle but probing prose, as he seeks out facts to record the truth. The resulting articles follow individuals—sometimes with their partners, sometimes with their families—and their complicated and colourful careers in the conjuring arts. We are also treated to a rare, self-reflecting point of view in Dr. Dawes’s final two articles, as he concludes the Rich Cabinet series by commenting on what magic history and collecting meant to him for seven decades.

This has indeed been quite a rich cabinet of magical curiosities. And now, we can’t wait for these books to join your collection.

Congratulations to Magicana’s founder and artistic director, David Ben, on his appointment to the Order of Canada!

The Order of Canada recognizes individuals—trailblazers—who have enriched the lives of others; who have made a difference to Canada.

David Ben is one of those special individuals.

David is a unique individual who has made significant and lasting contributions to the Canadian arts community, specifically in performance art. As a leading figure in the world of magic, David Ben has spent forty-five years exploring, developing, performing, preserving and sharing magic—its repertoire, technique and history—across Canada, and internationally.

While he is recognized as a fine sleight-of-hand practitioner, David is truly a multi-dimensional artist. A performer, writer, historian, producer, publisher, and, perhaps most importantly, a community activist—dedicated to sharing wonder through the development of Magicana, and its archives and community programming.

David truly represents the Order’s motto: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM– “They desire a better country.”

We are delighted, thrilled, and proud to congratulate David on his appointment to one of the most extraordinary levels of recognition for a Canadian citizen.

Thank you for joining us on this special week. As we close out a decade of celebrating these awards, we reflect with great fondness and joy on the great privilege to honour these individuals and organizations. Congratulations to you all!

The Slaight Family Foundation has now awarded $510,000 in celebration and recognition of magic as an art. The belief and commitment that the Slaight Family Foundation has made to magic is truly amazing. Thanks to the Slaight Family Foundation, fifty-three individuals and organizations have been recognized and acknowledged for their outstanding achievements in the pursuit of the impossible.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Slaight Family Foundation, and in particular to Gary Slaight, for creating these awards to both recognize and celebrate magic.

These awards are named in honour of Allan Slaight. Allan had a lifelong love affair with magic, and throughout his life, Allan made deep and meaningful contributions back to the art through his research, writings and philanthropy. We are deeply honoured that his family, through the Slaight Family Foundation, continues Allan’s generous legacy.

Congratulations to STEPHEN MINCH, this year’s recipient of the Allan Slaight Lifetime Achievement Award! As an author, editor, historian and publisher, Stephen has contributed an incredible body of work to magic’s literature. With over eighty titles published under his imprint Hermetic Press alone, not to mention all the other titles that he has written over a fifty-year span, Stephen has created a lasting and enduring legacy. It’s a deep honour to recognize Stephen for his outstanding contributions to magic!

We conclude our week of award celebrations with the happy announcement that STEPHEN MINCH is this year’s Allan Slaight Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. This award acknowledges an exceptional commitment to magic through the dedicated efforts of an individual over a lifetime, and it comes with a prize of $15,000 and an iPad from the Slaight Family Foundation. As an outstanding author, historian, researcher and publisher, Stephen Minch has redefined the modern-day magic cannon. We are thrilled to recognize his incredible contributions to magic with this award.
