If on a Baroque Night…

The Baroque era (1600-1700) was fascinated by the nocturnal world, and the theatre and visual arts of that period are well known for their depictions of the night, playing with the themes of darkness and contrasting light. By contrast, in today’s world, thanks to technology, we find ourselves in constant illumination, and we are never able to experience a moment in total darkness. In this performance, we dim the lights and explore the secret worlds that arise after nightfall, through a series of night scenes from iconic Baroque plays of differing genres, two comedies and a tragedy. We invite audiences to experience trickery, love, loss, disguise, and confusion in scenes from Amphitryon by Molière, Venice Preserv’d by Thomas Otway, and The Rover by Aphra Behn.

L'époque baroque (1600-1700) était fascinée par le monde nocturne. le théâtre et les arts visuels de cette période sont bien connus pour leurs représentations de la nuit, jouant avec les thèmes de l'obscurité et des contrastes de lumière. En revanche, dans le monde d'aujourd'hui, grâce à la technologie, nous nous trouvons dans un éclairage constant, et nous ne sommes jamais en mesure de vivre un moment dans l'obscurité totale. Pour ce spectacle, nous tamisons les lumières et nous explorons les mondes secrets qui surgissent après la tombée de la nuit, à travers une série de scènes nocturnes tirées de pièces baroques emblématiques de genres différents, de deux comédies et d'une tragédie. Nous invitons le public à faire l'expérience de la ruse, de l'amour, de la perte, du déguisement et de la confusion avec des scènes d'Amphitryon de Molière, Venice Preserv'd de Thomas Otway et The Rover d'Aphra Behn.
