Canadian Fine Arts - Toronto

Canadian Fine Arts - Toronto Canadian Fine Arts features historical Canadian paintings by the Group of Seven, Les Automatistes, Painters Eleven, and other significant Canadian artists.

CFA Gallery (Canadian Fine Arts) opened in Toronto in 2000. With over fifty years of experience, Michel Bigué has developed an expertise recognized by both seasoned collectors and major art institutions. CFA specializes in the purchase and sale of important Canadian Art. Our expertise includes turn of the century painters such as Morrice, Suzor-Coté, Cullen, Gagnon and other Impressionist artists

of that era. Through the years we have organized important shows and sales of the Group of Seven (MacDonald, Jackson, Harris, Varley, Lismer, Carmichael, Johnston) and some of their famous contemporaries (Thomson, Carr, Milne, Fortin). Post-war artists are of special interest to us. We are looking to purchase important works by the Les Automatistes (Borduas, Riopelle, Ferron, Gauvreau, Barbeau, Leduc, Mousseau) as well as the Ontario based Painters Eleven. We also buy and sell independent artists such as Lyman, Pellan, Colville, Lemieux, Dallaire and Kurelek.

Shore at Emma Lake, 2002

30,000.

Who is Dorothy Knowles?

1. Dorothy Knowles held a torch for landscape painting during the rise of abstraction int he 50’s/60’s. Her husband William Perehudoff was an important Prairie Abstract painter and held significant influence.

2. Knowles brought a level of rigour to landscape in the Prairies which was scarce at the time. She helped to elevate the considered study, through composition, surface, and material, to a museum caliber and expected others to rise to the occasion.

3. For proud Saskatchewanians, Knowles is on the list of significant artists alongside Perehudoff, Fafard, Lochhead, and Bloore

4. The location featured in this painting, “Emma Lake”, home to the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops. The workshop was a point of contact in the 60’s for Canadian and the major critic Clement Greenberg, but in a wider sense, created a location for art to flourish in the province. Knowles returned in the 90’s to teach and maintain the legacy of the Workshops.

Currently available at the gallery. We’d love to show it to you in person.

A selection of works by Jean-Paul Jérôme is available through Canadian Fine Arts.

Jérôme’s work holds a significant place in Canadian modernism. As a co-founder of Les Plasticiens and a signatory of the 1955 Manifeste des Plasticiens, he helped define a distinctly Québec approach to geometric abstraction: refined, disciplined, and deeply attentive to the relationships between colour, line, form, and space.

For collectors, Jérôme offers an important bridge between the intellectual history of Montréal abstraction and the enduring visual power of pure form.

Canadian Fine Arts regularly works with collectors seeking works by Jérôme. While selected pieces are featured online, additional works and future opportunities may be available through direct inquiry.

Please contact the gallery for availability, pricing, condition details, or to discuss a particular work, period, or collecting interest.

Ulysse Comtois

A true stunner.

Ulysse Comtois holds a very distinctive place in Canadian art. Closely connected to the Automatistes, he was deeply respected by his contemporaries, while continuing to move his own practice forward through colour, form, shape, and structure.

This work from the 1970s reflects a high point in Comtois’s production. It is one of the strongest examples we have seen on the market from this period — a moment when his paintings carried both the memory of landscape and the force of abstraction.

These works are not landscapes in the traditional sense, but they often hold that frequency: something atmospheric, rhythmic, and deeply felt as you spend time with them.

We welcome you to visit the gallery to experience works like this in person, and to let us share the stories and histories behind them. For collectors interested in the Automatistes and postwar Canadian abstraction, Comtois remains a deeply rewarding artist to look at closely.

Ulysse Comtois (1931–1999)
Transactions 2, 1979
Oil, 24 x 60 in.
