Founded in 1970 by Ken Gass and Frank Trotz, Factory Theatre was the first company to exclusively produce Canadian plays. Its huge initial success led to the founding of the Alternate Theatre Movement which radically changed the face of Canadian theatre in favour of the Canadian voice. For more than 50 years, Factory has been known as the “Home of the Canadian Playwright” and has produced more than 300 new Canadian plays in mainstage productions and 600 more in workshop and other formats.

Introducing Factory Theatre’s new Artistic Director, Kevin Matthew Wong! We are thrilled to welcome Kevin, an internationally touring theatre creator, producer, and cultural leader, as he steps into this role leading Factory into a new chapter of rigorous, uplifting, and intimate performing arts at 125 Bathurst. 
 
Kevin’s appointment marks a new chapter for Factory Theatre that reimagines the institution as a world-class home for creativity while connecting Toronto with the world. Under Wong’s leadership, the company’s artistic vision will encompass theatre, dance, music, cabaret, film, Theatre for Young Audiences, devised performance and multidisciplinary creation. 

Kevin comes to Factory following seven years at Why Not Theatre, most recently as Executive Producer and Artistic Associate. There, he helped shape the company’s national and international work while leading a portfolio of large-scale and touring projects. Wong’s own creative work has been presented across Canada and internationally - his acclaimed Benevolence series explores Hakka identity, migration, guesthood and cultural inheritance across theatre, film and installation.

There’s no better way to bring our fall 2026 programming to a raucous close than with the return of Bad Dog Theatre’s beloved Holiday! An Improvised Musical (December 10 – 19, 2026), in association with Factory Theatre.  
 
Holiday! takes its inspiration from Stephen Sondheim’s Company to bring you the only party you’ll need. Based on suggestions from the audience, the cast weaves together a series of improvised vignettes and songs exploring love, relationships, and the true meaning of the season.

n November, Factory will host the full world premiere of Provisions, a Lester Trips (Theatre) Production in association with Factory Theatre (November 13 – 29, 2026). Provisions will complete the award-winning, critically acclaimed body horror trilogy that began with the sold-out Honey I’m Home in 2024 and was followed by the Dora-winning Public Consumption in 2025!



Crushed by the microgig economy, David accepts an odd job: accompany an agentic AI to an abandoned factory on the moon and retrieve the cast, crew, and data from a failed reality tv show before they all suffocate. (Meta)physical resistance gives way to ecstatic horror. Created by Lauren Gillis and Alaine Hutton.

In addition to our onstage offerings this fall, we’re so pleased to once again support Native Earth Performing Arts’ Weesageechak Begins to Dance 39 Workshop Stream, supporting projects in early stages of development for artists seeking to explore their project without the pressure of a public presentation.  
 
Weesageechak Begins to Dance is Native Earth Performing Arts’ annual performing arts festival showcasing new works and works-in-development by Indigenous artists across Turtle Island and beyond. Held each November in the heart of Regent Park in t’karonto, the festival is proud to welcome new theatrical, dance, music, and multidisciplinary works reflecting the breadth of Indigenous experiences, the richness of Indigenous arts, and offering a peek into Indigenous storytelling today and to come.

After 50 years of marriage and a lifetime devoted to climate activism, environmental icons David Suzuki and Tara Cullis take to the stage with a rare behind-the-scenes look at a life shaped by deep love, a commitment to joy, and the courage to act.

As a part of RUTAS 2026, Factory is co-presenting the Spanish language premiere of Mujer Venado | Deer Woman (October 1 – 3, 2026), produced by ARTICLE 11 with Aluna Theatre. 

Lila is a warrior. She is the daughter of a hunter who taught her all he knew. She’s ex-army, too. When circumstances converge, Lila finds the perfect opportunity to avenge her baby sister’s murder while exercising the skills taught by the Canadian government. Written by Tara Beagan.

We’re kicking off the season (in just a couple days!) with the return of the SummerWorks Performance Festival (August 6 - 16, 2026). 

Be sure to catch festival programming Provisions (Lester Trips (Theatre)), Soft Squishy Things (Ghost River Theatre / Macromatter), and the prolific SummerWorks closing party at Factory. 

This year’s Festival theme, Fight | Flight brings forward urgent creative responses to this troubling moment in time. Across the 2026 Festival, artists root themselves in place, in community, in ancestry, and in practice, while also shifting perspectives, rewriting histories, and creating new narratives through the body, exploring memory, consent, transformation, and identity, through resistance, humour, and intimacy.
