Calling all Black emerging theatre-makers! 🎭

Ready to level up your behind-the-scenes expertise? Applications are now open for Obsidian Theatre's Young, Gifted and Black program!

YGB is built for the next generation of leaders in Directing, Stage Management, and Design, including Set, Costume, Lighting, and Sound.

Five artists will be selected for mentorship, masterclasses, and apprenticeships with industry professionals. The YGB cohort will gain hands-on experience in collaborating on the YGB Showcase presentations. Your vision, your team, your stage.

To apply, you must:
● Self-identify as Black
● Have an existing practice and/or strong interest in developing skills within one of the
following disciplines - Directing, Stage Management, Costume Design, Set Design, Lighting Design, or Sound Design
● Be available between January and May 2027 (exact dates TBC)

Applications are now open for Obsidian's Recommender Grant for Theatre Creators! 🎭

This is a fantastic opportunity for Obsidian to fund new theatrical works by Black artists in development, regardless of age, gender identity, or career stage. ✨

Generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario, this program provides successful applicants with funding between $1000 and $3000 dollars to be put towards the creation and development of new Black Canadian work. Please note that this money cannot be used towards a production of a play.

Submissions are now open for Obsidian Theatre's 26/27 Playwrights Unit 📝✨

An intensive 8-month play development program supporting up to 3 Black playwrights through group sessions, individual mentorship, and a dramaturgical workshop — culminating in an excerpt presentation at our annual Playwrights Unit Showcase. Facilitated by playwright and actor Lisa Codrington. This is a paid opportunity, open to Black artists of all backgrounds, lived experiences, ages, and gender identities.

You should apply if you:

✔️ Have a script at any stage — idea to full draft
✔️ Are open to collaboration and feedback
✔️ Can attend the Toronto workshop & showcase in June 2027
