North America's oldest women-run theatre, and Canada's 2nd longest running theatre group! 🎭

The Alumnae Theatre Company, in cooperation with the City of Toronto, has called the old Firehall No. 4 home since 1972 when members renovated and restored this unique building (dating from 1905) at the corner of Berkeley and Adelaide Streets. But the company itself started back in 1918, when a group of enterprising women graduating from the University of Toronto banded together to form one of the

city’s first theatre companies. At a time when Torontonians had little opportunity to see theatre of any kind, this group staged the premieres of such works as Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (yep, you read that right), Ionesco’s "The Lesson", and Pinter’s "The Caretaker". OUR MANDATE: to produce works that offer strong roles for women; to produce works that are not often seen in Toronto; and to produce works that are written by Canadians. And we’ve been doing it for a long time - the company turned 100 years young in February 2018! Volunteers are welcome for anything from set building and painting to sound or lighting operation to backstage crew. Website: www.alumnaetheatre.com

We are thrilled to share that Alumnae received 11 nominations and one win as part of ACT-Co's Thea Awards, which took place on May 23, 2026. Congratulations to the casts, crews and production teams of New and Circle Mirror Transformation for their tireless efforts to bring beautiful theatre to life. Big thanks to the ACT-Co team and our adjudicators for their work throughout the year, for a lovely party and for their recognition. Woo hoo!
