Meet Leisure, a collaborative art practice, and learn about their participatory work

Inspired by a presentation by artist Simon Nicholson and economist Hazel Henderson at the First Global Conference on the Future held in Toronto in 1980, Leisure (Meredith Carruthers & Susannah Wesley) revisits early conversations around environmental care, collective action, and imagining more hopeful futures.

These ideas are reflected in ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜บ, where visitors engage with sand, paper, and water through play and experimentationโ€”inviting moments of curiosity, reflection, and connection.

๐Ÿ‘ Come play, make, and get your hands dirty! The group exhibition ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด is on view until Monday, September 7.

In the Toronto Starโ€™s recent ๐˜๐˜ง ๐˜ ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ series, our Artistic Director, Adelina Vlas, reflects on how Torontoโ€™s arts sector plays a vital role in shaping connection, belonging, and the cultural life of the city.

โ€œIf I were mayor, I would invest in arts organizationsโ€™ mission to strengthen a sense of community and belonging to the city. As an arts professional, I believe in the power of art to connect us, to present us with different perspectives on the lived experience of our fellow humans and to provide opportunities for community building.โ€

Her vision closely resonates with The Power Plantโ€™s commitment as a leading contemporary art gallery devoted exclusively to artists from Canada and around the worldโ€”sharing art with wider audiences through free admission to exhibitions, public programs, and events, while connecting communities locally and internationally through diverse artistic voices and pressing contemporary issues.

She underscores the role of arts organizations in creating spaces for connection and belongingโ€”making room for thought-provoking art, ideas, and conversations in everyday city life.

๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to The Power Plant exhibiting artist Lap-See Lam, the fourth recipient of the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award, on the opening of her award-winning solo exhibition ๐˜–๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter.

On view now until January 3, 2027, ๐˜–๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด re-presents Lamโ€™s immersive video installation ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ข ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ alongside other works ranging from new sculptures to installation and virtual reality. The exhibition explores cultural heritage, migration histories, and storytelling, drawing on the Hong Kong Chinese diaspora. Lamโ€™s practice engages Cantonese opera, shadow play traditions, and historical visual languages such as Chinoiserie, weaving together themes of memory, belonging, and generational inheritance.

๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ข ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ was previously presented at The Power Plant in Fall 2024, in partnership with The Vega Foundation. Drawing on folklore and a layered mix of traditional and contemporary video techniques, the work reflects on the experiences of the Hong Kong Chinese diaspora in Europe and beyond.

The Power Plant alum Abbas Akhavan is now at the 61st Venice Biennale, representing Canada! ๐ŸŽ‰

For the Canada Pavilion, Akhavan presents the site-specific installation Entre chien et loup, reimagining the buildingโ€™s architecture as a Wardian caseโ€”a precursor to the terrarium once used to transport plants across the British Empire. Through this work, he offers a meditative space in which to revisit a pivotal moment in world history and to consider how we position ourselves today in relation to our natural and built environments.

Akhavan is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice reflects on the relationships between place and history, attending to the geopolitical forces which define spaces.โ  At The Power Plant in 2018, he presented a solo exhibition, variations on a landscape, transforming the Clerestory with a circular fountain, creating a communal space for gathering, reflection, and exchange.

๐Ÿชท If youโ€™re planning a trip to Venice, be sure to experience his installation โ€” on view until November 22, 2026.

Happy International Childrenโ€™s Day! ๐Ÿง’๐ŸŒˆ

First proclaimed in Geneva in 1925 during the World Conference on Child Welfare, this day recognizes the rights, well-being, and voices of children around the world.

Our current exhibition, ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, takes a cue from this seminal movement to recognize and uphold the rights of childrenโ€”the future builders and changemakers of tomorrow. Shifting traditional exhibition structures, it actively engages children and young people, putting their interests and needs front and center through movement, exploration, creativity, and play.

๐Ÿช‚ Bring your little ones to discover ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด on Wednesday and Thursday from 11 AMโ€“6 PM, Friday from 11 AMโ€“8 PM, and weekends from 11 AMโ€“6 PM.
